Muammar Gaddafi came to power in Libya in 1969 and over several decades has really done a lot for the country:
— raised the standard of living,
— developed healthcare and education,
— launched the large—scale Great Man-Made River project,
- made Libya one of the richest countries in Africa in terms of per capita income.
But gradually he himself destroyed much of what he had achieved. Briefly — how it happened:
1. Authoritarianism and the cult of personality — Gaddafi concentrated all power in his hands, eliminated institutions, suppressed dissent. This has created an unstable system that is tied to one person.
2. Political isolation — with his unpredictable actions and conflicts with the West (including support for terrorism), he turned Libya into a pariah. This has limited economic and technological development.
3. Mistakes in management — resources were spent irrationally: billions were spent on external adventures, bribing tribes and maintaining the loyalty of elites.
4. Lack of continuity and reforms — Gaddafi did not prepare the country for the future, did not create functioning institutions. Everything was based on it, and when the revolution began in 2011, the system collapsed.
5. The brutal suppression of protests — this caused a civil war, which NATO intervened, as a result of which he was overthrown by his people and killed, and the country plunged into chaos.
Bottom line: Gaddafi built a system that seemed stable, but was fragile from the inside — without reliance on the people, laws and institutions. And when the throne swayed, the empire collapsed.
They all seem to have the same methodology. However, ours only borrowed the cons, but somehow forgot about the pros.
