Shooting multimedia system.
Presentation of a multimedia system for shooting clubs.

A detailed article from the guys from PiterPro_Production. Video production of St. Petersburg, Moscow, in which they tell in detail and interestingly about their project, where I took part as a director of photography.

Our team was faced with the task of creating a series of commercials with an image presentation of the latest technology of Russian production of large screens and multimedia systems for shooting clubs.

The general producer Andrey Ermakov, the producer of the project Angelina Golikova, the director Nikita Khoziainov and the screenwriter Olga Kostyanova started creating various concepts of the future video. The presentation of future videos and joint discussion led to a common choice of a concept that combined a realistic beginning of the video (a hunter walks through the forest, hears rustling between bushes, takes aim ...) and a transition to the shooting hall, where a realistic picture for the shooter is recreated using screens, creating a presence effect. Thus, we clearly and imaginatively demonstrate the main goal, that the screens and the whole system immerse the participants in the shooting process and they fully feel themselves in the conditions of nature.

Director of Photography Mikhail Smirnov, gaffer Maxim Borovikov, mechanic and focus puller Konstantin Smirnov and other specialists were involved in the implementation of the project. The only, but very important, technically difficult task that the operator and mechanic faced was to guess with the camera, or rather with the setting of the lighting on the camera, in order to avoid flickering on the screens. We were warned that the screens definitely do not work in the generally accepted ranges of 50-60Hz. And since the screens in the frame are visible by the storyboard in each frame, this problem is very important, not fixed at the post-production stage and entails the failure of filming. And to conduct test surveys taking into account the departure to the Wedge turned out to be not very cost-effective. After a number of consultations and meetings, the decision fell on the Sony-FX6 camera, and the Tamron optics series. The Sony-FX6 camera has a very wide range of tuning of the lining, up to hundredths. But as a safety net, it was decided that the first car with a piece of equipment with an operator, producer and director would start early in the morning from St. Petersburg and by the middle of the day would arrive on the set and check the camera and shooting. And so we did, Mikhail, the director of photography, first of all checked the camera on arrival at the site and we were able to adjust to certain parameters, after which we gave the command to leave St. Petersburg to the second car with the main equipment and the rest of the film crew.

"Field filming is always complicated by the organization of the process. We need to quickly find and approve locations for shooting, in this case we had to quickly find a suitable forest, a suitable angle, including taking into account the trajectory of sunrise, so that it would not appear in the frame in the southern angle at the time of shooting. And also, in general, to organize food, movement, accommodation of the film crew. But if everything goes well, then you get pleasure from such filming and the process itself."
A.Golikova, producer

The shooting was divided into several shooting shifts. In the morning of the first shooting day, the installation of operator rails began, which were supposed to solve a complex semicircular frame invented by producer Andrey Ermakov, and it was also planned to shoot the main volume of frames for the video in motion from the rails. Preparation of actors for filming. The video was attended by professional hunters, shooters, children engaged in shooting. We initially knew that non-professional actors would be filming. Thus, we did not immediately take into account complex acting tasks, views, subtexts, eye play, etc. in the script.

"We wrote the script as much as possible with tasks and movements that specialists do every day, which means it should have been familiar to them, it's clear. They didn't have to portray anything."
N. Khoziainov, director

The shooting period was calm, but they were shooting quickly, it was necessary to shoot not a small amount of frames. We managed to watch shooting from various weapons. Delve into the technology of various maps specially created for screens, immersing shooters in effect-reality. We launched snow, wind, animals, switched night and day views. They came up with what kind of map looks better on which frame, this whole process took place during filming. Due to the well-coordinated work of all specialists, it was possible to manage to remove all the necessary amount of material.

The post-production stage was headed by the editing director Ilona Morozova. Immediately the final decision was made on the installation with a resolution of 2:35, common in the cinema. On the set, three screens are arranged with the letter "p", due to their very large width, the screens seemed very elongated, and with a narrower frame resolution, the compositionally elongated screens did not look so elongated. Of course, such a decision is made at the stage of filming, and it was made, but it was shot with the possibility of editing and in 16:9 format, in case you want to use the full-screen version. But after the first demonstration of the frames, it immediately became clear that the product looks much more advantageous on the movie.

Andrey Perchin worked on the sound design, there was an important task to repeat the sounds of real weapons, because professionals who will watch videos at exhibitions and presentations should believe the picture, but at the same time the number of shots, the sound of bullets flying should immerse the viewer in what is happening on the screen.
A number of videos were made for the internal work of the company and demonstration at narrowly focused exhibitions and conferences and are not published in the public domain, but we can still show one of the videos.
