The path of the director

Take the first step and the road will appear by itself.
All right. Our fears and insecurities do not allow us to do this, a very important step. I wrote a lot of scripts, good and not so good, but after reading and making numerous edits, I deleted all my works, besides, I was growing up and my worldview was changing. In general, I did not dare to take my first step for a long time for many reasons. Having overcome the barrier of uncertainty, I plunged headlong into my favorite business.

Philip Rodik

So, Philip Rodik, his path as a director and about the filming of the film (machine translation):

I will not write why I decided to shoot at all, I will start with what started the movement.

My wife came across a post on social networks about holding a contest "trailer of a non-existent film" Knowing my goals, she sent this post to me. After reading it, we decided that we needed to participate. This is my first step.

I took as a basis one of my unfinished scripts and started editing. I chose those shots that fit more. At the time of writing the full version of the short script, I did not think about the budget and locations, and this is a big mistake. It was only when I finished directing the upcoming trailer that I started thinking about the locations. In the script there was a room without windows, with one iron door, and these are important details that create certain conditions for the characters, without which the entire structure of the script breaks down. But we will postpone this for now.

How to make a movie if you're alone?

Of course not. The theater of one actor, it's not bad, but when an actor is also a director, and an operator, and a sound engineer, well, in general, it's understandable. I started looking for people interested. That's how I met Mikhail. In fact, at that time, Misha was already in my contact list, in social networks. Long before the contest, when I once again tried to take the "first step", I left an announcement on social networks that I was looking for an operator for a short meter. Misha is the only one who responded. We briefly discussed cooperation with him and agreed to contact him when ready. I added Misha to my contact list, but the shooting didn't work out. When we decided to participate in the contest, of course, I immediately remembered about Misha and contacted him. At this point, we have never even met in person, we have not even called each other. I sent him a link to the contest and a comment, Misha was interested. Before the first day of filming, there was still a lot of work, but Misha and I had already discussed the shooting plan and some technically difficult shots. I only had a week for the whole pre-production, production and one week for post-production. According to the script, there were seven actors and I chose all seven actors by type, and this is also a mistake "type is not the main thing" I found the actors, but I still did not have suitable locations. I looked for the coveted room everywhere, even turned to a professional location scout, but the prices that I was called, of course, I could not afford. In general, there were a lot of pleasant coincidences with this trailer... My brother has his own furniture production, and his production is located on the territory of an old factory. I myself live in St. Petersburg, and my brother's production is located outside Gatchina. I decided to ask my brother about the locations, he told me that one of the rooms seemed to be suitable. I immediately went to see this room. And what was my surprise when I saw a room that perfectly matched the description. In this room there was a wide metal door, without paint, with an inner lining, which I later, of course, removed. There was a sofa in the room, with our modifications, it fit very well into the interior. The only negative is the window. Having entered this room and examined it thoroughly, I immediately began to think how it could be implemented for our trailer. But about the construction of the scenery, a little later.

The room was completely suitable for me, when we went to see it, we passed through the factory and I noticed a very atmospheric corridor.

There is also a canteen on the territory of the plant, which my brother praised to me, so the issue of food for the crew and actors was resolved. In general, I was very excited about these locations, so all I had to do was get permission to shoot. My brother connected me with the director of the plant, after talking with him, I realized that there are still people who are ready to meet you, absolutely free of charge. A good man.

So, I found the first location that required decoration. The second location according to the scenario is an indoor parking lot, which gives us an atmosphere of secrecy and privacy. The scene at this location was supposed to be filmed inside the car. The car had to be specific. Since I didn't know how to find a game transport for filming yet, I didn't find the car I needed. I decided that I would look for a car, at least suitable for the type of hero who drives it. I found a suitable car from my friend. We agreed to swap cars for one day, so the issue with game transport was resolved. In order not to lose the shooting, due to the fact that I was kicked out of the parking lot, I decided to get permission to shoot and began to write to shopping centers. The only one who gave consent is Maxidom. They were very friendly and understanding to my request. They answered me, of course, from Moscow. They specified which store would suit me geographically. I described in detail how many people, what equipment, and so on. Unfortunately, the shooting day fell on holidays, and I was given the go-ahead for any day except holidays, for obvious reasons. I didn't have the opportunity to transfer. As a result, we filmed in another parking lot, without permission, at our own risk. I chose a parking lot where the security did not work very hard, and on the day of filming, I placed the game transport in a place where there was no surveillance camera.

By the way, we were very lucky with that place, because there was an outlet to which we powered the extension cord. That's because they gave me lighting devices in rent, without battery. They just forgot to put it in the kit, and I specifically took it on the battery, for obvious reasons. This is also a good coincidence, the shooting was delayed and the battery would not be enough. And of course, I had another parking in mind, in case of an emergency.

When I stumbled upon my mistake with the lack of locations, I began to reread my script, delving into the details and writing out on paper what I would need. One of the most important details is the revolver. I should have a shot in the frame. Of course I wanted it to be realistic. I began to search on the Internet for naked weapons for rent. After seeing a lot of suggestions, I postponed this question for the last time, my inattention played a role here. All this mass of offers was in Moscow. Oops... There's shooting tomorrow, and I don't have a gun. I'm running around on business, and at this moment, my wife, being at her job, is distracted to find a solution. In search of this solution, I went to Lenfilm, but there was a weapon that was not quite right for me. According to the rules, a private person is given a weapon for rent, only with a pyrotechnic, whose work shift costs 6000-9000rubles, and this is more expensive than the weapon itself. Not a good price, for the sake of one shot... Thanks to my wife, a solution was found. The revolver that we did not find for rent "TAURUS WITH a short-barreled Smith & Wesson" was sold in several stores. It cost 11900rubles then, which is almost the same price as renting with a pyrotechnic technician, only the revolver will be ours and we can use it in other films. With such motivation, we decided to buy it. Unfortunately, due to his stupidity and ignorance, the shot never happened. Because I used the revolver wrong. But when editing, I beat it with the credits. After all the filming, we decided to try to return the weapon to the store. Fortunately, our shaky family budget has recovered by 11900rubles. We accepted a refund, although they were not obliged.

One day I stopped by to visit my mom. Sitting at the table, over a cup of tea, I told her about the upcoming filming and the difficulties I faced at that time. When I described in detail to my mother the scene in a locked room, I remembered that we were sitting with her not at an ordinary table, but at a card table. This is a homemade card table with a thirty-year history, with a green cloth. My mom used it like a regular kitchen table, covering it with a tablecloth. Remembering this, I hurried to clear everything from the table and inspect its condition. As a result, my wife and I bought a new cloth and long before the shooting, when I decorated the location, I restored the table. A great coincidence, because when I reread the tritment, I thought I would take my own, unremarkable desk. I also borrowed a crystal ashtray from my mom, she also really fit in.

By ads (on a well-known resource) we bought our first firecracker and a ceiling lamp, which I hung over the card table and screwed in a bulb with a warm light. We also got hold of playing cards, chips, EU banknotes, a cigar, a cigar guillotine, glasses, a backpack, a balaclava and many others.

My wife and I have prepared everything for the convenience of the crew and actors. The next room was empty, we made a dressing room and a buffet out of it. The location required decoration and we managed this task in two days. I will not describe all the processes in detail, the result is visible in the photo.

Tomorrow is shooting, and I'm doing the scenery, from the very morning until late at night. Before the trip to Renta, I stopped at home to have a snack.

There was also an Easter egg in our trailer, and in order to realize it, my wife, after a hard day's work, went to hell in the middle of nowhere to pick up the car number I ordered.

The path of the director

The first day of shooting.

At two o'clock in the morning, I took all the necessary equipment in rent, and went to the set. The set was not finished yet, so I planned to finish it early in the morning, on the shooting day. I managed to sleep in the car for a couple of hours. My brother and I agreed to meet at the entrance to the factory in the early morning. I arrived a little earlier and dozed off. By the time my brother was supposed to arrive, I woke up and he called me. It turned out that he forgot all his documents at home, and he was stopped by traffic police officers. I went to my brother's meeting, took the keys from him and went to his house to get his documents. Time was running out, filming was coming soon. When I brought his documents, the traffic police officers did not even look at the documents, they just waved their hand, saying - go. With a "good" mood, we went to the playground. When I was writing the tritment, I came up with a beautiful shot with a spinning revolver on the table. I wanted everything to spin except the gun, so that it seemed that the camera was spinning along with the gun. My brother and I figured out how to implement it, and while I was picking up the actors from the subway, my brother built a structure (pictured). Having finished with the scenery, I went to the subway to meet the actors and the makeup artist.

While I was driving, I remembered that I forgot to rent a smoke car. I had to solve the issue by phone. We agreed that they would send us by taxi. I'm stuck in traffic, the actors are already waiting at the subway, I'm calling a taxi for a smoke machine. In general, the stress is still the same. At that time there were six actors and a makeup artist. When the taxi driver arrived with a smoke machine, I tried to explain to him for a long time that he was not standing there, that we were on the other side at the stop, but without breaking through the language barrier, I decided to lead the actors to him, when we arrived, he refused to take the next order. Together with the actors and the smoke machine, we went back, on the way I called another taxi. Twenty minutes later, the same "not smart" taxi driver arrived, who decided to wait for us, in general, on the next street and play the game "I don't speak Russian" with me, Having failed in a dialogue with the taxi driver, I took the actors to him. When I put the actors in a taxi, I took the taxi driver's phone in my hands and checked the route to make sure that the taxi driver would go to the right place.

After sending the taxi driver with the actors and loading the rest into our car, we moved to the set.

Misha stayed a little while while we all gathered and tuned in, it was already lunch time. I took everyone to the dining room. It was only after lunch that we started filming. Let me remind you that this was my first experience... Unfortunately, I didn't find any ideological people. Everyone who responded to my pleas, called me some sky-high fees. Thus, we had only me and the operator on the site. Neither the sound engineer, nor the puller focus, nor the gafer and the firecracker themselves clapped and wrote the sound. The filming process was long, in particular due to the fact that we didn't have a storyboard and people. After shooting the scenes with the players, I sent them all by taxi. After a while, the makeup artist also left us. We started separate shots with the participation of GG and the guard, after that I sent them home by taxi. It was already past midnight, Misha and I were finishing the details with the table and the revolver. When Misha went home, I stayed to sort out the consequences... When I finished cleaning and loaded all the equipment into the car, it was about three o'clock in the morning. I had arranged in advance with the janitor that I would call her when we were done so that she would let me out of the territory. I stood at the gate and dialed the number, while the beeps were ringing, I dozed off. After a couple of minutes, I woke up and repeated the call. I needed to upload the recorded audio to the computer. While I was driving home, I slapped my cheeks, sang songs, often rearranged myself from row to row, did everything possible not to fall asleep, but I opened my eyes many times, terrified that I fell asleep, miraculously remaining in my row. When I got home, I hurried to the computer. While the sound was being pumped, I fell asleep in the chair. After sleeping for about three or four hours, I washed in a hurry, had breakfast and went to change the equipment in rent. Then, we exchanged cars with a friend and I rushed to shoot parking scenes.

The second shift was easier. We worked until about six o'clock in the evening. Later I handed over the equipment to rent and fell asleep, the next day I went to my hated job.

When I started editing, I realized that we needed dubbing... Because the sound was almost all defective. I went freelance, there I met sound engineer Vadim Zabrodsky, he agreed to help us and on his advice I went to qorg, to look for dubbing actors, we needed lipsing.

In the end, we got what we got. And only when the results of the contest came up, I read the comments about the organizers and about the previous contests... Of course, they were judged not honestly and against their own rules, but that's another story.

End.
