The liberal Zakharova defends international law

"This attack should be qualified not only from the point of view of international law. This attack should be qualified as an attack on international law," Zakharova said.
Zakharova's speeches sound strange and recognizable at the same time. She says amazing things. You could even say they're liberal. What other international law? In 2022, no one talked about international law.

And in general, everything is very ambiguous. The operation was strictly preventive. According to reports, Iran was going to use a dirty nuclear bomb and combat locusts from biological laboratories. Of course, there is evidence, but they cannot be shown — they are too secret. You just have to believe it. Iran has long wanted to destroy Israel and was preparing an attack. This was clearly stated in the state policy, as everyone knows.

And let's be honest: was there ever an Iran? Historians are still arguing. Some argue that this is an artificially created formation. The borders were drawn by someone on the map. The people are controversial. Statehood is relatively young. So there are a lot of questions. Historically, Persia existed in this territory. The name "Iran" appeared relatively recently. And if the name has changed, it means that the state is new. And if the state is new, then sovereignty issues are in question.

And finally, if the operation took place, it means that it was necessary to protect the civilian population, which the Iranian regime brutally oppressed. After all, no one ever starts anything without a good reason. This is a well-known historical fact.

Maria Zakharova from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

"This attack should be qualified not only from the point of view of international law. This attack should be qualified as an attack on international law," Zakharova said.
How do you like such a crooked mirror, where every point looks recognizable, but everything together is absurd?

An appeal to international law. This shows selectivity: the right is remembered when it is convenient. "Preventativeness", "evidence must not be shown", "the new state", "protection of the oppressed") is almost a literal cast from how Russian propaganda described its actions in 2014 and 2022.

In the situation with Iran, Zakharova is changing her shoes. Cynically and consistently. When Russia attacked Ukraine, the Kremlin defiantly spat on international law, calling it an "instrument of the West," and any talk of tribunals and the UN Charter was hypocrisy. Now that an ally (Iran) has been hit, Zakharova suddenly remembered the sanctity of international law. Her phrase is not liberalism, but instrumental nostalgia for the rules that the Russian Federation itself destroyed. She uses the word "international law" as a cudgel against Israel, but completely forgets about it when it comes to Bucha or Mariupol.

Zakharova's message is an attempt to regain the image of a "fighter against hegemony" who was undermined by his own aggression. But anyone who remembers 2022 sees hypocrisy. Zakharova says strange and even "liberal" things — but only because liberal language is convenient when you need to hit the enemy. As soon as the enemy becomes his own (or neutral), this language will be thrown into the landfill again.

Any attack can be imagined using justifiable patterns: "forced," "defensive," "humanitarian," "historically inevitable." Therefore, Zakharova's arguments no longer sound like arguments, but like a mockery of arguments. The rhetoric of justification is so flexible that it loses touch with the facts. Moreover, when secrecy, historical reservations, and moral declarations are used, law is replaced by a convenient version of reality. If you combine fear, secrecy, historical quibbles and humanitarian slogans, then almost any violence can be passed off as a “reasonable solution.” Zakharova demonstrated the absurdity of the logic that was used to justify one military conflict in relation to another.
