From the letters and diaries of German citizens during the Second World War (the publication "How it happened that Germany became Fascist"), one can see that propaganda put a lot of pressure on all their feelings, that they absolutely believed in the sanctity and necessity of war. But what about the church and the clergy? They should have said no. But no, they didn't. Propaganda also sang them scary stories about Satanists and fascists. (Oh, they were fascists themselves.)
Ludwig Muller, Reich Archbishop of German Christians (1939):
"Just as God sent Germany to fight for justice, so our church blesses the weapons carried by our soldiers in the name of God's order."
Karl Barth, a Swiss theologian, described German priests during the war:
"They said that Germany was leading a crusade against Bolshevism, and Hitler was an instrument of God's judgment."
Cardinal Adolphe Bertram, head of the Catholic Church in Germany (1940):
"We pray for our soldiers and their victory, so that they may bring peace and order to a world shaken by chaos."
Protestant pastor Siegfried Leuer (1941):
"Our army marches forward with the sword, as David's soldiers once did, bringing light against darkness."
Bishop Franz Justus Rarkos (1942):
"Germany defends not only itself, but also the entire Christian civilization from the enemies of the faith."
I understand that the topic of protecting traditional values is very well used in propaganda. You can always find or invent an enemy who encroaches on your Christian values, for which you are ready to destroy anyone. The German propaganda took advantage of this very skillfully. However, history remembers a lot of crusades and everyone always believed that they were not like that.

The exhibition's opening stand depicts Patriarch Kirill in a military uniform. He also visited the exhibition together with the speaker of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin.
