The feds used pepper balls to disperse the crowd. News outlets report that more than 100 people were arrested Friday. Among those arrested was David Huerta, president of the California Service Employees International Union, who officials say obstructed federal agents by blocking their vehicle.
Saturday, June 7.
On Saturday morning in Paramount, a neighborhood adjacent to Compton (those in the know will understand), there were isolated clashes between protesters and law enforcement officers amid reports that immigration agents were planning to raid a Home Depot store in the area. Protesters kicked and threw objects at police cars. Several Waymo cars were burned, and I saw a video online of looters breaking into the store. Well, that's just an excuse to run and loot, no matter what happens. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets.
Sunday, June 8.
The third day of protests in downtown Los Angeles began with the arrival of National Guard troops, as ordered by Mr. Trump. "Any demonstration that interferes with immigration enforcement will be considered a 'form of sedition,'" he said in an order issued Saturday.
By about 10:30 a.m., nearly 300 California Guard troops had taken up positions at three different locations around the city.
They were joined by Homeland Security officers in riot gear.
Around 1 p.m., members of the California National Guard, the Department of Homeland Security, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement formed a line and attempted to push back protesters from the Metropolitan Detention Center. Officers used tear gas, pepper balls, and non-lethal bullets, or rubber bullets, to push back the crowd.
Later in the day, some protesters spilled onto nearby Interstate 101, blocking traffic in at least one direction before authorities pushed them back. Another protest began Sunday afternoon at Los Angeles City Hall.
By 6 p.m., protesters in the area had largely dispersed, and law enforcement officers had returned to their positions near the federal building complex. A few dozen protesters remained nearby, blocking Alameda Street.
The city center has now been declared an unlawful assembly area following the violence. Anyone caught will be arrested.
It is said to be the first time since 1965 that a president has bypassed a state governor to activate National Guard troops to quell civil disobedience. California Governor Gavin Newsom called Mr. Trump’s order “intentionally inflammatory.” He said law enforcement has no shortage of resources to deal with protests, and that the federal government is sending in troops because it wants a “spectacle.” Both Governor Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have called on the Trump administration to reverse the order federalizing the National Guard and return it to the governor’s command. You are illegal, ICE grabs you and deports you from the country. Although, according to the law, you can appeal. I can give you a lot of situations when you temporarily lose your legal status. Your visa expired, you didn't have time to change your status, for some reason, you didn't get into the judicial system, you don't have money for a lawyer, the lawyer was incompetent. And I only listed a small part of the situations that can happen. Are these all criminal stories? Therefore, you should be careful when talking about legal and illegal immigrants. The situations can be different, where an illegal immigrant is far from a crime. As was said: an immigrant is not an immigrant.
June 13 - Victory (for now), the court blocked Trump's decision on the National Guard and now it goes under the command of our governor.
Trump backed down on the issue of immigrants. He started writing that red state farmers are sending him signals that they can't live without their wonderful immigrant workers, who are great. And now something needs to change.
