Today I will tell you how to photograph a portrait and choose the right exposure using the example of my work.
So, I was shooting on Xiaomi Redmi Note 9s
The style of the photo shoot was chosen. Business lady. In accordance with the task, the shooting location was chosen. These are the bank buildings in St. Petersburg. There's glass all around and in offices.
It was decided to take a photo on the stairs in front of the main building.
Ladder lines, broken fence lines, everything tends to geometry and is quite rigid. Therefore, the pose also has a bend and sharp angular shapes, elbow, knees, the toe of the shoe is raised.
The fact that she is sitting on the steps gives some kind of audacity and a hand on her hair gives a touch of flirtation and sexuality.
Now let's move on to the technical part. I took pictures with the main camera, without any approximation.
The camera recorded the exposure a little incorrectly and because of the dark steps and the black jacket, the face was slightly overexposed.
How to make the frame darker so that the face is not overexposed?
There are TWO options.
✅ The first one. Automatic.
You need to touch the smartphone screen directly to the face area of the model.
Then the camera will understand that you want to focus (sharpness) at this point and measure the exposure (brightness) at this point
And it will set such parameters so that the skin is normally exposed (not overexposed and not dark)
❌ If the face is too small in the frame and the camera just can't adjust, then there is a second way.
✅ Second. Manual exposure (brightness) correction.
You need to tap on the screen and hold your finger until two such icons appear:
The color and font, on different phones, may differ, but the meaning is the same.
The square is the focus area. The place that should be sharp.
And the sun icon is a place that should be normally exposed (be neither light nor dark, but clearly visible)
After these icons have appeared, you can swipe your finger up on the screen and then the whole frame will become lighter, or lead from top to bottom and then the whole frame will become darker.
As soon as you find the desired brightness, click take a picture.
- There are phones on which it is possible to separately transfer each icon to the right place. This is more convenient and is often available in flagships.
This is convenient when you want to focus on one object and set the exposure in a different way.
After adjusting the exposure, I took a picture and got such a portrait.
