Probably everyone knows that the Bible tells about the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden and that God forbade eating fruits from this tree. But Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the tree under the influence of the serpent, who promised them that they would become like gods and know good and evil.
Critics of Christianity often use this episode as an argument, arguing that a bad God forbids people to have knowledge. However, this is not about banning knowledge, because throughout the Bible, God constantly encourages knowledge, wisdom, intelligence, and learning. It is enough to recall the Parables, Ecclesiastes, the Apostle Paul. The problem is not knowledge per se.
In the Jewish context, "knowing good and evil" is not just getting information, but appropriating the right to final moral judgment. In other words: not to find out what is good and evil, but to decide for yourself what is good and evil.
Before the fall, man lived in trust:
— God is the source of truth and measure.
— A person takes this measure without inventing his own.
And then people became "gods" not in the sense of wisdom or love, but in a single aspect - self—government. Everyone has become a small autonomous judge for themselves and others.:
- I decide for myself what is right.;
- I justify my own actions.;
- my personal truth is higher than the general truth.
And as a result, we see that
one considers murder evil, the other justice.;
one considers war a crime, the other a sacred duty.
This is not the fruit of enlightenment. This is the fruit of the loss of a common standard of morality.
As a result, a person found himself with freedom, but without the truth, with the ability to justify anything. And with the audacity to try to put God on his side.
Knowing about good and evil has not made people better people. It just gave everyone the opportunity to have their own personal convenient truth.
Christianity claims the opposite:
the problem is not that a person doesn't know enough, but that he is too sure that he already knows everything. Man has learned to decide without God, but he has not learned to bear the consequences of his decisions and responsibility for them.
What should I do about it? To seek knowledge about good and evil.
