And now I remember that in August 2023, there was a large and powerful Pacific hurricane Hilary. It originated in the ocean off the coast of Mexico and it was predicted that it would hit the Baja California Peninsula and Lower Southern California (this is Mexico), as well as pass through the United States: California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah.
Hilary was positioned as the first such hurricane in California in a century. At first, he was assigned the 4th category, but then, approaching land, he weakened to the 2nd.
So, hurricanes in California are not a frequent occurrence, but they are still possible.
And before that, it was a rainy winter here. Well, it was rainy, the Californians lamented, but for us from Russia it was normal, we also joked that we had brought rains from St. Petersburg.
They take potential threats very seriously here, and when it rains, they notify everyone like, "Don't go anywhere, it's dangerous, there may be floods," and stuff like that... And if there is an earthquake, missing people, and so on, a notification comes to everyone's phones, it goes right on top of all the windows, emits an alarming sound and information about the danger. In the case of missing people, we all receive external characteristics of the missing person or information about the alleged abductors.
I'll go back to Hilary. The threat of Hurricane Hilary prompted extensive and varied preparations. In Mexico, thousands of people have evacuated to shelters in anticipation of "catastrophic and life-threatening flooding." The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued its first-ever tropical storm warning, extending from the border of Mexico and the United States to the north of Los Angeles.
What is the result. In Mexico, the hurricane killed three people and caused at least 250 million pesos ($14.7 million) in damage. The power outage affected 315,929 people in the country, although most services were restored within four days. The storm left behind flooded roads, landslides and fallen trees on the Baja California Peninsula (Mexico).
In the United States, one person died in San Bernardino County, California. The estimated total damage was US$900 million, most of which occurred in Inyo County, California, where most of the roads in Death Valley National Park were damaged by floods. The park was closed for two months.
