The Start
When I graduated college, I was like most college students. I was so excited to utilize my degree to pursue a career that I was passionate about. I got a degree in Economics and knew that my job needed to involve money. Ever since I was in second grade, I knew that I saw things from a larger perspective than most people. I was intrinsically more curious and motivated than my peers and I always struggled to wonder why.
As the years went on, the housing crisis hit and it was the first major recession I remembered. Like millions of families across the planet, we lost are homes and my parents got a divorce and our household was officially broken. The cause? A combination of subprime Mortgage-Backed Securities with illegitimate evaluations from the rating agencies and empowering politicians allowed a massive bubble to form and an even bigger bailout of the corporations, starting a new trend in the economic world called quantitative easing.
I wanted to understand why and how money had such a big impact on people's lives, yet so few people really understood how to use it and the power behind the force. Therefore, I studied economics in college, began writing a book in my free time, and really starting to understand the world for what it is. What I found was quite disturbing, but that may be for another time.
The Middle
So, I graduated college, had a degree in economics, and then got recruited by a traditional finance firm to be a financial advisor. This was perfect. I loved helping people achieve their goals and grow and at the end of the day, I got paid well doing it. I studied and passed my Series 7, Series 66, and a barrage of other state licenses necessary to perform my job in around two months.
Everything was going great, my personal life was good, my professional life was good and then something happened. My uncle introduced me to cryptocurrency. I was taken back, everything that I had learned in my tests, everything I thought I knew about finance was turned upside down.
I was immediately intrigued and immediately decided to go down the entire rabbit hole of crypto, from the genesis. Before Bitcoin, before the internet. I unconsciously went to the first principal analysis and sought out the answers to the rules, laws, and theories about money, human coordination, and decentralization.
The more I researched, the more time I took the more I understood. The more it became clear that this was the direction of the future and there wasn’t any force capable of putting a stop to it. If a nuclear war were to occur, and the entire world was obliterated, Bitcoin and Ethereum would still exist. The code will always be there and can always be copied. Their mark on humanity has been made.
When I was working in traditional finance, I was constantly frustrated with the rules, regulations, compliance, oversight, the trust needed, permission needed, and other hurdles that made selling products that people needed difficult. In today’s form, the industry is too slow, complicated, and inefficient to serve the needs of the common people. However, bitcoin and eth are not. Cryptocurrency and the internet are not. The United States doesn’t need a $600,000,000,000 military budget (bigger than the next 10 countries combined, all of which are allies) to protect their nation's currency when their nation's currency is on the internet.
The End
I was at the traditional finance firm for 6 months, with a terrible vice-president that was no help in my first professional job. Then, I got fired. I know it may sound like I’m making excuses, but I don’t want it to sound like that. I’ve always been an ambitious and motivated perfectionist, but I was certainly underperforming in terms of production, but it wasn’t because of a lack of hard work. I regularly put in 60-hour weeks, working late days and in the weekends. They said that my production was inefficient, although I was less than a few hundred dollars from achieving the stated goal. However, during my time at the firm It was a pandemic, my partner had bailed on me, the markets still earned 20%, there was an election and markets were often volatile. It was hard to convince people to move their money. However, I believe if I had 6 more months, I would have been able to learn the business more efficiently and far surpass my goals.
The New Start
Now that I know what I know. I don’t want to go back; I want to find a job in crypto so bad because I’m immensely passionate about it. What I’ve done to learn is follow and subscribe to Twitter and YouTube personalities that are known for their unique behaviors and immense wealth from this industry. In addition, I read articles, books, thought deeply, and used the crypto products to investigate. I’ve realized that I need to learn how to code from scratch, I need to form a community of people that I trust and enjoy working with so that we can share information with each other that will be mutually beneficial. I will take the lessons I learned from the traditional finance world and apply them to crypto because both industries have so much room for growth.
Ultimately, I know I will be successful because of my constant resilience. I’ve often heard that in order to be successful in crypto, you need to survive. So that’s what I plan on doing. Survive by any means necessary. Be a sponge to learn. Participating to meet people. Taking action to achieve and finally.
Everything happens for a reason and I may not see it right now, but getting fired from my traditional finance job may have been the best thing to ever happen to me.
