Awfully Basic Complex Creatures

By cMasta | pmcmasta | 21 Mar 2024

So I was thinking about buying some land for a house and, at the suggestion of my father (whom I was surprised opened up to this idea at all), I decided to look up the zoning laws in my jurisdiction. The zoning laws turn out to be very vague and extremely comprehensive at the same time, which is kind of a paradox and also subjectively a waste of their SOP-level detail. Personally I would have no problem with the person that wrote that being replaced by an advanced AI model, but I would probably feel differently if jargon writing was my main source of income. To be fair to the people at library.municode.com, I feel the same way about most to all other common-sense legal documentation and the authors of said documentation. Would an emotionless computer not make the most impartial judge? Also to be fair, some zoning rules are put in place for the well-being of those nearby, and though I may have trouble drawing a line between acceptable and excessive, I think that is okay.

Anyway, I got to reading through it a bit, and although at first I was angered by the number of times I saw the word 'tax', I realized that some to most of that tax is actually expense that the 'governing body' is incurring. Whether we agree with their expenditure or not, they defined the value of their efforts in terms of money, and they expect to be compensated in the same medium. If we wish to use the services that they made available, we must abide by their terms; if we refuse to abide by their terms, then we must find ways to achieve our goals without making use of their services. Such is the way of the sovereign man. Humans are awfully basic complex creatures, although, to their credit, needless complexity is often frowned upon by the very smartest of them.
