Sodium has atomic number 11 and symbol Na, deriving from the Latin name Natrium. It is a soft, waxy, silvery, reactive metal. It belongs to the category of alkali metals which is abundant in natural compounds. It is highly reactive, burns with a yellow flame, oxidizes on contact with air and reacts violently with water. When chopped into a fine enough powder, sodium ignites spontaneously in the water. However, this metal does not ignite in air below 388 K (115 ° C).

Although metallic sodium has some important applications, the main uses of this element lie mostly in the compounds it forms. In fact, millions of tons of chloride, hydroxide, sodium carbonate are produced every year.

It is used for:

  • Medical use
  • In certain alloys to improve their structure,
  • In soap (in combination with fatty acids),
  • As a cooling fluid and heat transport in fast nuclear reactors and in the valves of some endothermic engines.

CAUTION: Sodium powder is flammable in air and explosive in water. It is also corrosive when in contact with the skin. This metal must always be handled with care. Sodium must be stored immersed in liquid hydrocarbons or kept in an inert atmosphere. Contact with water and other substances that react with sodium should be avoided.

Sodium is relatively abundant in stars and the spectral line of this element is among the main ones in starlight. Sodium makes up about 2.6% of the earth's crust making it the fourth most abundant element and the first among the alkali metals.
