Studio Bound — Every Production I've Designed: Fourteen Commissions, Five Continents, Twenty-Five Years

By Patrick Larsen | Patrick Larsen | 31 May 2026

I founded Studio Bound in Singapore and have led every commission in the portfolio from first brief to final installation. Over twenty-five years the work has spanned live event environments, broadcast design, permanent installations, and theatrical productions across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. This is a complete account of that work — every commission, every collaborator, every context.

Expo 2020 Dubai Ceremonies — Dubai, UAE, 2020

Expo 2020 Dubai Opening Ceremony, Al Wasl Plaza, Dubai, 2021. Production design: Patrick Larsen / Studio Bound. The world's largest dome, 192 participating nations, broadcast globally.

Designing the Expo 2020 Dubai ceremonies was the largest commission by observed audience that Studio Bound has delivered. The opening and closing ceremonies were held beneath the Al Wasl Plaza dome — a 130-metre permanent structure and the largest 360-degree projection surface in the world — with 192 participating nations in attendance and a global broadcast audience. My design brief required an environment simultaneously legible to every culture in the room, held to an aesthetic standard that could represent the ambition of the world's largest cultural gathering, and technically integrated with the dome's broadcast and projection infrastructure. There is no other project in my portfolio that tested every dimension of the Studio Bound model at once the way Expo 2020 did.

Singapore National Day Parade 2019 — Singapore

Singapore National Day Parade 2019, the Padang. Production design: Patrick Larsen / Studio Bound. Creative direction: Dick Lee. Three simultaneous audiences — live, broadcast, and diaspora.

The 2019 Singapore National Day Parade was produced under the creative direction of Dick Lee at the historic Padang in the heart of Singapore's civic district. I designed the complete production environment for an event with three simultaneous audiences: sixty thousand people at the Padang, the national broadcast audience watching across Singapore, and the international diaspora watching from around the world. Red and white — Singapore's fixed national palette — were the only colour parameters. Multi-cultural representation across Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Western heritages was mandatory. The show had to move every audience at once, from every position. The NDP is the brief that most completely represents everything Singapore taught me about designing at a national scale.

Via Riyadh — Riyadh Season, Saudi Arabia, 2023

Via Riyadh opening gala, Riyadh Season 2023, Saudi Arabia. Production design: Patrick Larsen / Studio Bound, in collaboration with Five Currents and Dragone. Performer: John Legend.

Via Riyadh was the opening gala of Riyadh Season 2023 — Saudi Arabia's flagship cultural entertainment programme, the largest entertainment initiative in the Middle East. We produced the gala in collaboration with Five Currents, with John Legend as the featured performer. I designed the complete production environment: a gala setting significant enough to announce the occasion's ambition, built to recede and support the performance the moment John took the stage. Via Riyadh was my first Riyadh Season commission and the beginning of what became a three-production relationship with the programme across two consecutive seasons.

Terhal — Riyadh Season, Saudi Arabia, 2025

Terhal, Riyadh Season 2025, Saudi Arabia. Production design: Patrick Larsen / Studio Bound, in collaboration with Dragone.

Terhal was commissioned for Riyadh Season 2025, again in collaboration with Franco Dragone's production company. The production is an immersive theatrical experience navigating Saudi Arabia's cultural history and heritage — a journey through time designed for a contemporary international audience at a purpose-built venue. I developed the full production design environment: the visual language, the spatial architecture of the experience, and the technical integration of live performance, projection, and scenographic environment. Terhal was my second Riyadh Season commission and deepened the Middle East practice I'd begun to build through Via Riyadh.

Souk Wonders — Riyadh Season, Saudi Arabia, 2025

Souk Wonders, Riyadh Season 2025, Saudi Arabia. Production design: Patrick Larsen / Studio Bound, in collaboration with Dragone.

Souk Wonders, also for Riyadh Season 2025 in collaboration with Dragone, reconstructed a traditional Arabian marketplace as an immersive theatrical environment. The brief was to create a space that felt genuinely inhabited — a living souk that carried the aesthetic weight of centuries of Arabian market culture, staged at the production standard Dragone demands. I designed the full scenographic environment: materiality, scale, spatial organisation, and the integration of live performance within a physical world we built from scratch. Souk Wonders completed three Studio Bound commissions for Riyadh Season across two seasons — a sustained body of work that established our position in the Middle East entertainment market in a way a single project never could have.

Ba Na Hills Entertainment Environments — Da Nang, Vietnam, 2022

Ba Na Hills entertainment environments, Da Nang, Vietnam, 2022. Production design: Patrick Larsen / Studio Bound, in collaboration with Sun Group and Dragone.

Ba Na Hills is the commission in my portfolio most unlike any other. The Sun Group resort in the mountains outside Da Nang is one of Southeast Asia's most visited destinations — and in 2022, working in collaboration with Sun Group and Franco Dragone's production company, we designed a series of permanent entertainment environments within the resort. Permanent is the operative word. This is architecture, not staging. The materials I specified had to age correctly in Vietnam's mountain climate over years and decades. The environments had to reward a guest on their fifth visit as much as on their first. I had to design for permanence rather than performance — a discipline I'd never been tested on at this scale, and one that changed how I think about every project since.

Amystika — Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas

Amystika, Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, Las Vegas. Production design: Patrick Larsen / Studio Bound. Dark theatrical spectacular, Criss Angel / Franco Dragone production. Designed for extended Las Vegas run.

Amystika is a full-scale theatrical spectacular at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas — created by Criss Angel and directed by Franco Dragone, built around the origin story of Criss Angel's childhood and his path to becoming one of the greatest magicians alive. I served as Production Designer, responsible for the full scenographic environment: the stage architecture, visual language, and material palette that make the Mindfreak prequel world physically real. The design challenge specific to Amystika is one I find genuinely interesting: it plays to a regular Las Vegas audience over an extended run, which means designing something that holds its power with a returning audience. The design cannot rely on the reveal. It has to work on the second and third visit as completely as on the first.

Bob Marley Hope Road — Las Vegas, Nevada, 2025

Bob Marley Hope Road, Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, 2025. Production design: Patrick Larsen / Studio Bound, in collaboration with Dragone.

Hope Road is an immersive journey through Bob Marley's life and legacy, opened at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas in 2025. The name refers to 56 Hope Road in Kingston, Jamaica — Bob Marley's historic home and studio. The design brief required a physical environment that could carry the cultural and emotional weight of Bob Marley's story — the music, the community, the spirituality, the resistance — for an international audience experiencing it in Las Vegas. I designed the full scenographic environment: the spatial architecture of the immersive journey, the material and visual language of each chapter, and the overall design framework that makes the narrative coherent for an audience moving through the space rather than watching it.

Varuna — Bali, Indonesia, 2023

Varuna, Bali, Indonesia, 2023. Production design: Patrick Larsen / Studio Bound, in collaboration with Dragone. Indonesia's first underwater theatre.

Varuna is Indonesia's first underwater theatre — an immersive theatrical environment designed to place the audience inside a world beneath the ocean surface. I designed the production environment for Varuna: the visual language and spatial architecture of the underwater world, the technical integration of projection, lighting, and live performance within a scenographic environment, and the design framework that makes the illusion coherent for an audience that inhabits rather than watches the production. Building something genuinely new for a market — the first of its kind — is one of the situations where the Studio Bound integrated model earns its value most clearly. There is no reference to fall back on. The team has to build the answer.

Metaverse of Magic — Australia Tour, 2023–2024

Metaverse of Magic, Australia Tour 2023–2024 (Sydney Coliseum, Canberra Theatre Centre, QPAC). Production Designer and Set/Costume Designer: Patrick Larsen / Studio Bound.

Metaverse of Magic is the world's first interactive magic spectacular — a touring production that played the Sydney Coliseum Theatre, Canberra Theatre Centre, and QPAC Concert Hall between November 2023 and January 2024. I served as Production Designer and Set and Costume Designer, working through Studio Bound to build the full scenographic identity of the production. The premise inverts the conventional relationship between stage and audience: the audience inhabits the environment the illusion creates rather than watching a performer on a defined stage, with real-time gamification built into the experience. I designed a production environment flexible enough to tour — adaptable to different venue configurations while maintaining the internal consistency of the immersive world across every venue it played.

Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games Broadcast — Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games broadcast environment. Production design: Patrick Larsen / Studio Bound, for NBC and CTV. BDA Gold Award.

For the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics I designed the broadcast environments for NBC and CTV — the sets, studios, and presenter spaces from which the games were televised for audiences across North America. Broadcast environment design at Olympic scale is a specific discipline: you're designing for camera systems, not human eyes, and the colour relationships, scale, and lighting that read correctly on screen are different from those that read correctly in the room. The Vancouver broadcast environments won a BDA Gold Award — the broadcast design industry's principal prize — and received a Canadian Gemini nomination. Vancouver was my first commission at Olympic scale, and the experience of designing for multiple simultaneous networks in a shared international broadcast compound is one that changed how I think about multi-audience design at every scale.

Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games Broadcast — Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games broadcast environment. Production design: Patrick Larsen / Studio Bound, for BBC and NBC.

At Rio 2016 I designed broadcast environments for multiple international networks including BBC and NBC — the sets and presenter environments from which the Summer Games were covered for audiences in the UK, the US, and beyond. Designing broadcast environments for multiple networks at the same games means satisfying different camera systems, different presenter formats, and different audience expectations simultaneously, within the spatial and logistical constraints of an international broadcast compound running continuously for two weeks. The Rio work built directly on what I'd learned at Vancouver and closed the loop on my Olympic broadcast design practice.

BBC Wimbledon — London, United Kingdom

I designed the broadcast studio and presenter environments for BBC Sport's Wimbledon coverage. What made the Wimbledon commission specifically interesting was the weight of the tradition: BBC's Wimbledon coverage is one of the most tradition-conscious broadcast productions in British sport, and the studio environment had to honour 147 years of Wimbledon's visual identity while meeting the full technical requirements of contemporary broadcast design. I wasn't designing a new environment — I was designing something that felt like it had always been there. A design that serves the sport, the history, and the camera at once, without any of the three feeling compromised.

NBC Education Nation — New York, USA, 2012

NBC Education Nation, Rockefeller Center, New York, 2012. Production design: Patrick Larsen / Studio Bound. Emmy Award-winning.

NBC Education Nation was an annual summit on American education broadcast from Rockefeller Center in New York by NBC News. I designed the broadcast environment for the 2012 edition — the set, studio, and presentation spaces that framed the summit's television coverage. The design was recognised with an Emmy Award (News & Documentary). That Emmy is the credential that appears on every Studio Bound commission since — it's the anchor of the professional identity I've built over the following decade. The NBC Education Nation work represents the broadcast design foundation that underlies everything in this portfolio: the discipline of designing for cameras, for live production, and for an audience that measures the environment against the best broadcast design in the world.
