In an attempt to fight against the falsification of university diplomas in Brazil, the Ministry of Education (MEC) has proposed, creating a Blockchain-based platform to issue digital certifications among non-state universities.

The ministry’s proposal aims to attack a problem that is not new in the country: the issuance of fake university certificates, which has been the subject of local press headlines for years.

The Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) to issue its first diplomas issued via blockchain, the institution reported on January 22 2019.The first certificates were delivered on Thursday 21/02 at the University auditorium, when 11 graduates from the Computer Science and Computer Engineering courses received the digital diploma

But Brazil would not be the only country in Latin America to adopt blockchain technology for issuing university certificates.

The National University of Colombia (UNAL) has been offering diplomas in digital format since 2019, thanks to the Blockchain.

Universities in countries like the United States, England, Canada, Switzerland and India already use blockchain for issuing digital diploma.

The project that implemented the digital diploma via the decentralized system is ‘Digital Document Registration, Authentication and Preservation Service (GT-RAP)’. It was funded by the National Education and Research Network (RNP), an organization linked to the Brazilian federal government's Ministry of Science and Technology. The new service issues and authenticates the diplomas without risk of losing information, which must be able to last beyond the institutions and systems of origin.
