Experts say that excessive substance abuse doesn't actually shorten your lifespan, it simply shortens the length of your remaining years.  Most people's years last for 365 days, but hardcore street junkies have been known to cycle through an entire year in less than a month.  Dee Dee Ramone supposedly died at the age of "50," but most punk-rock medical personnel know that he was actually 85 when the dope procession came to take him away.

Whatever the case, and for whatever reason, my birthday happens to coincide with Dee Dee Ramone's this year. I will be 52; he will still be dead.
