Artificial intelligence and the human imagination

In a few months, artificial intelligence has exploded in the eyes of the general public, in particular by highlighting the ChatGpt tool from OpenAI. The revelation of its ever-increasing power engenders all fantasies and inflames the media, awakens fears and generates hopes.
Until then, for the average individual, AI was above all a machine for creating science fiction stories. It was difficult to concretely imagine fiction becoming reality. However, this transition is well and truly on its way.

Like any emerging technology, artificial intelligence is initially scary because the majority of people don’t know how it works in practice.
As a reminder, nearly two centuries ago, the arrival of the steam engine, precursor of trains, had brought its share of disproportionate beliefs and fears: among them, one imagined the degradation of the uterus of women who would take the train or even spontaneous combustion due to the excessive speed of these vehicles.
In general, many anthropologists have pointed out that with each arrival of technology that significantly modifies our relationship to space or time, humans have erected the Shield of Fear.
Thus cars, planes, computers, the Internet have aroused disproportionate conservative reactions. Yet in the end, these tools have become familiar to us, even essential.
It is likely that artificial intelligence will follow the same track.
