Increasing my emotional fitness
This meant destroying my ego and walking away from any provocations. Be the BIGGER man. Walk away. Do no insert yourself to have an excuse to use your weapon. "The ultimate aim of martial arts is not having to use them." - Miyamoto Musashi. I have always carried this mentality with me even when I learned various martial arts. Luckily, I've never had to use the martial arts I've learned (Muay Thai, Boxing, and Karate) against people who wanted to start anything. I simply walked away. 

Be Vigilant (but not too vigilant)
I became more aware of my surroundings. I began to observe cues if other people were also carrying. If I saw a shiny metal clip on a person's right pocket, I took note of that person having a pocket knife. At restaurants I chose seats that faced the main entrance and had space for me to run away from other people should something bad happen. While it is fun coming up with these mental puzzles to solve about "how to survive should x happen in this location." I made sure to not let it consume me. You see, it's easy to have it consume you. That old lady isn't playing undercover old lady who is secretly out to stab you in your neck because you let your guard down. Okay, maybe I'm being facetious. A realistic example might be someone open carrying. Although I don't agree with it completely, I am making the personal, generalization that most that open carry aren't the kind of people who are going to use that to hurt people. In fact, I personally feel safer if I know that another person has a gun on person with them.
