After some consideration I decided to see what all the fuzz was about with DeFi.
There are a lot of confusing terms like yield farming, liquidity mining, impermanent loss, APY, staking and so on that present a first barrier to entry.
The learning curve is steep!!!
You also have to understand how transactions work on the Ethereum network (gas price, gas limit, interaction with smart contracts).
So after reading a lot and watching some YouTube videos I got enough confidence to get started.
After doing some research these are the projects I decided to test out:
- yearn.finance / vaults:
- Due to FOMO, I deposited GUSD into the GUSD vault that stated an APY of +2500%. It turned out to be some kind of error and the vault was then closed. No gains here.... just wasted gas to get in and out.
- Curve.fi / providing liquidity
- Since I already had some GUSD I decided to try the GUSD pool on curve. This was a pain, the UI isn't very friendly and after some days I only got a couple of cents of "profit"
- Uniswap / providing liquidity / staking
- So I withdrew in DAI from the Curve GUSD pool to provide liquidity in the ETH-DAI pool on Uniswap to earn some UNI. The UI here is pretty simple and easy to follow. The incentive program ended on November 17th so no more UNIs to be earned here, just fees.
- Balancer / providing liquidity
- Got some DeFi+L from PieDAO to provide liquidity to the 70/30 DeFi+L/ETH pool
- PieDAO / staking
- From the Balancer pool, the BPT LP tokens can be staked in PieDAO to earn DOUGH. So far so good.
- BarnBridge / staking
- Deposited USDC to the USDC/DAI/sUDC pool to earn BOND
These are my impressions so far:
- DeFi projects need more "for dummies" style information available on their sites. This would help a lot in getting more adoption from regular users. BarnBridge does this very well in my opinion.
- Graphs and dashboards: every platform has its own way of displaying transactions and showing your positions. I like Uniswap's interface. You can track all your positions using a tool like https://zapper.fi/
- Beware of gas prices and limit. More than once I got this message when attempting to withdraw from Curve: "Although one or more Error Occurred [Out of gas] Contract Execution Completed". This basically means you wasted gas and nothing got done. https://ethgasstation.info/ can be helpful to estimate the right gas price for a transaction.
I've learned a lot this past month or so since I started going down this DeFi road. There's still a lot more to cover and I'll keep posting my experience and comments on this blog.
If you have an interesting experience or some recommendations please let me know in the comments.
