I've had the chance to see Metallica perform live before but for one reason or another I never went. With the inevitable effects of entropy starting to become obvious, both in them and in me, I thought that it is time I did see them before they stop touring which is bound to happen soon.
This post is not about my trip to Firenze and back but I have to say it was rather awful. The air travel companies should take a long hard look in the mirror cause what they seem to be providing these days is hardly a service worth paying for.
Anyway, I had half a day to spare in Firenze so I made the most of it by taking a long walk around town. Walking is my favourite thing to do when I visit new places. The city of Firenze is wonderful and has so many places worth visiting as well as being generally very pleasant to walk around. The coffee and food are , as you may expect, simply brilliant too. The weather was nice and sunny, perhaps a little too hot at times but overall I had a decent enough day.
I reached Visarno arena, which is the venue for Firenze rocks, around 5:30pm and it took me just over half an hour to go through security and enter the arena. If you've never been like me, I think you'd probably agree that seeing it for the first time is an impressive experience. The size of it is just magnificent even when half full. The scene looked so big and the audio equipment seemed huge with amazing sound.
Before this I didn't even know who Jerry Cantrell was though "Alice in chains" used to be one of my favourite bands when growing up.
I quickly realised my mistake and was glad I entered the concert venue when I did. Jerry Cantrell has assembled a new band that seems pretty good and they played four "Alice in chains" songs that I really enjoyed listening to though their other music was nowhere near as nice. I think they played for about 45 minutes and went off.
After a half an hour pause a band named "Greta van fleet" came to the scene. That's right I didn't bother checking the supporting acts before the concert!! I was so focused on seeing Metallica ;-)

So yes, I ended up reading about them on Wikipedia to find out who they were. Three brothers it seems which is interesting and some name they borrowed from someone they knew who lived in their town. The music seemed decent enough though I was completely unfamiliar with it. And also the voice of their singer has the kind of style I don't enjoy listening to. So somehow I survived with the help of a beer or two!
After another break of half an hour or so, the time has finally arrived and Metallica were ready to start their gig! The venue was now full and you could see how the density of people has increased significantly.

Metallica were simply put brilliant. This was a breath taking magnificent affair. It helped of course that I knew all the songs and most of them are part of my all time favourites. The show was so good that I was actually pretty happy that I didn't go to see Metallica before in some other time and venue which would have been way less impressive. It is difficult to put in words what we witnessed that night. Me and 15000 others , singing songs with our idols like we did when we were teenagers. It's certainly a memory to keep forever and to treasure. I am thankful that I had a chance to experience this concert.
thanks for reading. :-)
