That's exactly what people are doing and have been doing since BlackRock (but that's another rabbit hole). Let's stay focused. Yes, you can build AI agents to trade for you, set up alerts for new trends, and automate the process. I started this journey trying to assist a client as a freelancer, and let me tell you, how people talk to others these days is... whew, you get my drift. But shoutout to the brother who put me on to this info. It opened my eyes to another avenue, and now I don't even need to take on new projects.

Bet! We are using n8n and AI automation to create a system that trades 1-2 stocks from my account. It uses AI brains to make simple buy/sell decisions, limit orders, market orders, you name it. I know it sounds basic to all my trader homies, but I'm a newbie, and this gives me the potential to make pennies from nothing and for free!

😂 Stay tuned, this is just the beginning." What we did first was figure out the easiest platform with APIs that also gave us paper trading access so we could test our logic safely.

That is how we landed on Alpaca simple REST endpoints, instant paper accounts, and fast JSON responses that play nicely with automation tools like n8n. Once we had that running, we started exploring QuantConnect not just to backtest strategies, but to actually understand how institutional-level quant frameworks structure data, risk, and signal logic.

That opened a whole new side of our thinking: order flow, execution timing, data merging, and memory for trade behavior. There were definitely some brain-fart moments along the way, code loops, JSON parsing errors, and AI agents making random trades.

But each time we broke something, we learned how to make the next part smarter, faster, and more autonomous. This process wasn’t about copying someone's strategy; it was about building a system that thinks and adapts, learning directly from live data and our own trade history.

Step by step, we turned confusion into clarity, automation into execution, and ideas into something that actually runs.

Was it hard? Yes and no.

What we did was use AI to help write code and debug errors, then mind-mapped the entire flow step by step. But the main point of this project wasn’t just the tech — it was the information, the idea, and the creation → then testing.

The real question was simple: Can this actually work to make money while I sleep?

For now, the answer is: we’re building it — and doing it free. Why? Because we’re using and building everything ourselves with free AI tools, open APIs, and pure creativity.

So let's give you a step-by-step tool guide and list of what we used and how.

The Tools We Used (and How We Wired It Up)

We didn’t start with fancy hedge-fund infrastructure — just the simplest stack that actually works:

n8n – our automation brain that connects everything together
Alpaca – paper-trading API for real market data and safe testing
Google Sheets – where the AI logs trades, profits, and losses
Mistral / GPT AI Agent – the decision-maker that reads data and calls trades
QuantConnect – sends webhook signals when our backtest logic triggers
Gmail – sends us clean HTML emails when trades fill or cancel

We built the workflow node by node inside n8n:

Data flows in from Alpaca → gets cleaned and merged → AI reads it, makes a decision → orders go back to Alpaca → results and stats go to Sheets → and alerts land in Gmail

It’s a full loop — and it runs hands-free once it’s live.
