The Bible itself is the breath of God and put together by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Revelation 1:19 NLT says:
"Write down what you have seen—both the things that are now happening and the things that will happen."
We write of the things we have heard and of the things we have seen which is why Luke wrote the account of the transfiguration even though he wasn't there and the account tallies with that which Matthew wrote.
Like 1:1-3 clearly buttressed this:
NIV: Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,
just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.
With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
Matthew wasn't there but he wrote the account as an apostle of Jesus Christ with the encounter he had with those that were there - Peter, John and James. As an Apostle of Christ, propagating the gospel of Christ should be a priority and being led by the Spirit of God makes it easier.
