There must have been volcanoes on Lake Superior many millions of years ago. There is an awful lot of dark purple lava rock with trees growing out of them.
If you look on Google earth they found a couple possible "volcano" formations. Here is one off of Isle Royale. They say it's 3miles long, 1 mile wide and 1/2 mile tall.
