I smiled through it.

Showed up to every conversation like everything was fine. Laughed at jokes. Made plans I knew I couldn't afford. Dodged questions about how things were going with vague answers and quick subject changes.

Because in Nigeria, being broke is not just a financial state.

It feels like shame. Like failure. Like evidence that you didn't try hard enough or pray hard enough or hustle hard enough.

So you hide it. And hiding it is exhausting.

What nobody tells you is that the hiding is sometimes worse than the broke itself.

I was running on empty for longer than I want to admit. Checking my balance knowing what it would say. Doing the mental math every time someone suggested we eat out. Pretending my phone was slow when really I had switched off data to save what little I had.

But something quiet was happening underneath all of it.

I was learning. Building. Trying things online that I had never tried before. Failing. Adjusting. Showing up again.

The broke season did not break me — it built me in ways the comfortable seasons never could have.

I am not where I want to be yet. But I am not where I was.

And I am done being ashamed of the road that got me here.
