Hemp is a plant with a very difficult history. It has been grown for at least 6,000 years, but because of the current legal status of cannabis, we are primarily investigating it as a pharmacological drug. Most of you have probably heard about painkillers cannabinoids such as CBD, but there is another extremely important substance contained in hemp.

Flavonoids are a group of natural substances that are thought to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic properties. These compounds are found in fruits, vegetables, flowers, tea, wine and even in cannabis. In 1986, researcher Marilyn Barrett from the University of London for the first time identified two flavonoid in cannabis, known as Keflavik and Keflavik V. it Was established that both possess anti-inflammatory action 30 times more effective than aspirin.

But although flavonoids from other plants are now being studied more actively, there has been no specific data on their biosynthesis in cannabis for decades. Now, researchers from Canada have discovered for the first time how the cannabis plant creates these important analgesic molecules.

Using a combination of methods of genomics and biochemistry, the team was able to determine which genes were responsible for the creation of these two capeview. The results of their work are the first evidence of unique genetic paths in the plant cannabis sativa, which uses two enzymes to create kaplamin A and B.
