Pump.fun Explained: What’s New With the PUMP Burn, the SEC FAQ, and How to Get Started

Pump.fun is the platform that turned launching a token on Solana into something anyone can do in under a minute, and it’s back in the headlines this week for reasons that have nothing to do with hype: a real burn mechanism, a real regulatory clarification, and a real price move. Here’s what the platform actually does, what changed in the last few days, and how to get started with an invite code if you want in.

What pump.fun actually is

Pump.fun is a memecoin launchpad built on Solana. Anyone can create a token for free by uploading an image and setting a name and ticker, no code required. Every new token launches with a fixed 1 billion supply and trades against a bonding curve, an automated pricing formula where buying pushes the price up and selling pushes it down, instead of a traditional order book.

When enough buying activity fills the curve, roughly $69,000 in market cap, the token “graduates.” At that point the accumulated SOL pairs with the remaining supply in a PumpSwap liquidity pool, and the LP tokens get burned so nobody, including the creator, can pull the liquidity out later. It’s worth being honest about the odds here: fewer than 2% of tokens that launch ever reach graduation, and that rate has reportedly fallen closer to 0.26% in 2026 as the number of daily launches has grown. Most tokens created on pump.fun never go anywhere, which is simply how a fully open, permissionless launchpad works.

The PUMP token, and what’s actually new this week

Pump.fun has its own token, PUMP, which sold out a $600 million public offering in 12 minutes back in July 2025. Since then the team has rolled out a buyback and burn program funded directly by platform trading revenue: fees collected from swaps are used to buy PUMP on the open market and destroy it permanently.

As of October 1, 2026, roughly 169.3 billion PUMP tokens, about 16.9% of the original supply, have been permanently burned this way. Weekly platform revenue over September 22 to 29 came in around $16.1 million, with single-day buyback allocations as high as $1.41 million, and the platform has pulled in roughly $52.9 million over the preceding 30 days. PUMP itself is up close to 49.6% over the past week, trading at roughly €0.00526, giving it a market cap of about €2.45 billion and a spot around #40 on CoinGecko. None of this guarantees the price keeps moving in that direction, but the revenue and burn numbers are real and verifiable on-chain.

The other genuinely new piece of news: on September 25, 2026, the SEC’s Division of Corporation Finance issued an FAQ clarifying that a buyback and burn program doesn’t automatically turn a token into a security, but only for systems that are actually “functional,” meaning decentralized with no central party still pulling the strings. It’s a narrower win than the headlines made it sound, and it doesn’t resolve every open question about tokens like PUMP, but it’s a real, dated piece of regulatory guidance rather than rumor.

What the live platform actually looks like

Beyond the launch mechanics, pump.fun runs a full real-time terminal: a Trending panel ranking tokens by volume and price move, a Friends feed showing what people you follow are buying and selling, and a Top traders leaderboard ranked by realized profit. On the leaderboard snapshot below, the top trader’s single-day profit was over $580,000. It’s worth being clear about what that number does and doesn’t tell you: it’s one trader, on one very good day, out of a platform with enormous daily turnover and a huge number of losing accounts you don’t see on a top-10 list. Survivorship bias is real here. The leaderboard shows who won, not the odds you personally face.

The honest risk picture

Because anyone can launch a token for free, most of what appears on pump.fun has no underlying product, no team with a track record, and no reason to hold value beyond attention. Burned liquidity prevents a creator from draining the pool directly, but it doesn’t stop a “soft rug,” where a creator or early wallet simply sells their own holdings into buyers once a token gets attention. A lawsuit against the platform has alleged that roughly 98.6% of launches end up functioning as de facto rug pulls; that’s a plaintiff’s allegation, not an adjudicated fact, but it lines up with the graduation rate above closely enough to take seriously. Treat every token you see trending as something to verify independently, chart, holder distribution, creator wallet history, before you put money anywhere near it.

How to actually get started

If you want to try pump.fun yourself, the easiest way in is through an invite link, which gets you an invite code tied to that person’s account rather than a cold signup. My invite link is pump.fun/join/MasterPenguinX, with the invite code MasterPenguinX. Open the link, download the app for iOS or Android, and enter the code when you register, it costs you nothing extra and takes a few seconds. From there you can browse the live Trending and Top traders panels yourself before risking anything, which is the best way to get a feel for how fast this market actually moves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is pump.fun free to use?

Creating a token costs nothing beyond a small network fee. Trading carries a fee of roughly 1% on bonding curve swaps before graduation, tapering with token size, and 0.25% per trade on PumpSwap afterward.

What does “graduation” mean?

A token graduates once trading activity fills its bonding curve, at roughly $69,000 in market cap. At that point it moves to a PumpSwap liquidity pool with the LP tokens burned, so the pool can’t be drained directly. Fewer than 2% of tokens ever reach this point.

Is the PUMP token buyback real?

Yes, it’s funded by actual platform trading revenue and is verifiable on-chain. As of October 1, 2026, roughly 169.3 billion tokens, about 16.9% of the original supply, have been bought back and permanently burned.

How do I use the invite code?

Open pump.fun/join/MasterPenguinX, download the pump.fun app from the App Store or Google Play, and enter the code MasterPenguinX when you create your account.

Nothing in this article is financial advice. Pump.fun is a permissionless, largely unregulated platform where most tokens lose value and some are created to be sold into unsuspecting buyers; the graduation and alleged rug-pull figures above reflect that directly. This piece contains the author’s own pump.fun invite link (pump.fun/join/MasterPenguinX); using it costs you nothing extra. Always verify a token independently before trading, and never risk money you can’t afford to lose.
