Brent Just Touched $100 as US-Iran Strikes Escalate — Is $110 Oil Back on the Table?

Brent crude crossed $100 after new US-Iran strikes. The three WTI levels that decide whether $110 oil — and a September Fed hike — come next.

Brent crude just blinked past $100 — and this time it's not a headline, it's a warning.

I'll be honest. When I saw Brent cross $100 on Tuesday night, I had to double-check the chart. The last time oil stood here was July — right on the heels of a spring that printed 0.9% inflation in a single month, with three Fed officials already dissenting in favor of a hike.

So no, this isn't just another oil spike to me. This one has teeth.

What actually happened in the last 48 hours

A fresh round of US-Iran strikes pushed crude through a ceiling it had been testing for weeks. Brent crossed $100. WTI jumped 3% in a single session and is now knocking on $96. Tanker insurance premiums around the Strait of Hormuz are climbing again — and every ship captain in the Gulf knows exactly what that means.

Here's the part most people miss: this rally isn't about demand. Nobody suddenly started consuming more oil this month. What you're seeing is a pure supply-risk premium. And those are the moves that either reverse in a week — or don't reverse at all.

The spread tells the real story

Watch the Brent–WTI gap. When Brent runs hot while WTI lags behind, the market is pricing disruption somewhere between the wellhead and the water. That's geopolitical risk, not economic strength.

And the timing is awkward. August CPI prints on Friday. The Fed meets next Wednesday, with the market already pricing roughly 61% odds of a rate hike — in a year almost everyone was sure would bring cuts. Oil at $100 is the reason that conversation changed.

Three levels I'm watching this month

I keep it simple. Three numbers on WTI:

$96 — where we stand now. Hold here and the market shrugs it off.

$100 — the psychological line. A weekly close above this and inflation expectations reprice overnight.

$110 — the ugly one. At $110 we're no longer debating rate hikes. We're talking about a 2022-style inflation scare.

I've sat through two oil spikes in my trading life. The first one taught me something I never forgot: the third level always looks impossible — right up until the week it happens.

Why you should care even if you never trade oil

Because oil is the Fed's problem now. Hot crude means hot CPI, and hot CPI means a meaner dot plot next week. Gold already smells it — sitting around $4,350 and falling while oil rallies. That's the market pricing higher real yields, not peace.

And if "Strait of Hormuz" sounds like just a map name, remember this: roughly a fifth of the world's oil passes through that corridor. Every headline out of it lands in your grocery bill within weeks.

My question for you

I genuinely want your take in the comments:

Is $100 Brent a headline that fades by October — or a regime change? Where do you see WTI at the end of September: $90, $100, or $110?

Drop your number below. Last time I asked, the comment section called the top within two dollars. I'm half convinced you all know something I don't.
