Forbes has announced its Billionaires 2020 list - of which there are over 2000 - and those in the blockchain and cryptocurrency industry amount to 4.
In order of ranking, the four individuals are Bitmain co-founder Micree Zhan at #690 and $3.2 billion; former CEO of Ripple Chris Larsen at #886 and $2.6 billion; Jihan Wu, who also co-founded Bitmain, at #1307 and $1.8 billion; and Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong at #2087 and $1 billion. That comes to about $8.7 billion in total from crypto entrepreneurs.
The clear absentee here is Binance CEO Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao, whose net worth is estimated to be about $1.4 billion. Also missing is ConsenSys founder and Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin - his net worth is $1 - 5 billion, according to Forbes.
The individuals who topped the list are no newcomers - the top 10 richest billionaires hold more wealth than half of humanity - and most of them are associated with technology. Renowned investor and philanthropist Warren Buffett, who has mentioned on several occasions his dislike of cryptocurrencies, ranks fourth on the list, preceded by Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Bernard Arnault and family.
Of course, the market is far from being mature - which means there is plenty of time for things to change quite a bit. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic currently shows no sign of a near end, which could dramatically alter this list in the coming year. Perhaps we will see a greater number of crypto entrepreneurs next year, in addition to traditional investors changing their positions a tad drastically.
