Sometimes, I wonder about a thing that seems pretty simple at first sight but turns out to be frightening enough.
What will happen if I forget my Bitcoin wallet password forever?
Initially, I thought, "How could I forget something like that?" However, after realizing how many passwords we use every day, I became aware of the possibility. Email accounts, Facebook profiles, banking apps... One may easily forget a password for a service he doesn't use for quite a while.
The horrifying thing about Bitcoin is that there is no "forgot password?" button in the first place. 😅 In case if you have lost access to your wallet and do not have a recovery phrase, your Bitcoin becomes unavailable forever.
Thinking about it, one can understand how different crypto assets are from bank accounts. While losing access to the latter may be easily resolved by using your phone number or email address to restore access, the situation with crypto is utterly different. Here, you are the owner of your wallet and the person who is fully responsible for its safety.
In my opinion, this feature is both positive and negative at once.
The thing is that while being able to use your money as you wish and no one can stop you, you do not have a possibility to ask customer support to help you in case you made a mistake.
That's why I consider it crucial to pay enough attention to the safety of your crypto wallet. If I ever buy some valuable amount of crypto coins, I would make sure to save my recovery phrase in at least two different safe places. Sometimes, spending additional efforts on the security of your assets pays off.
This topic also shows that crypto is not only about making profit but also about responsibility. The higher level of your control over your money implies the necessity of being attentive to it.
For example, if I forget my Bitcoin wallet password forever, I would probably be disappointed with my carelessness but not the system itself.
This thought has already taught me an essential lesson purchasing BTC is pretty simple, but storing it correctly is another story. 🌱
Thus, before I think about possible profits from my investments in crypto, I should ensure that I will be able to access my wallet many years later. Having a wallet full of Bitcoin won't mean anything if I can't use it.
