What If Crypto Never Became Mainstream?

What If Crypto Never Became Mainstream?

Imagine it's 2036.

You're still paying in cash, by card, and by bank transfer.

Your parents have never owned any Bitcoin.

Your friends think cryptocurrencies are still "too risky."

And the vast majority of businesses have never seen a single crypto payment.

Does it mean cryptocurrencies failed?

Several years ago, I would have been confident in my answer.

Today, I am not so sure anymore.

I believe we became obsessed with one single goal  mass adoption.

During each bull run, everyone keeps saying "this year is when all people start using crypto."

But what if there is no such year?

Will Bitcoin cease to be Bitcoin?

Will blockchains cease to work?

Will the technology itself disappear?

Surely, not.

In reality, there are valuable things which were never popular.

Linux powers a major share of the Internet even though nobody uses it personally.

Email is another example  many people don't know how it works but use it anyway.

Perhaps, cryptocurrencies don't need billions of users to be valuable.

Perhaps, they only need to solve problems of those who are willing to use them.

For my part, I think that crypto has a much greater challenge than adoption.

It is trust.

People are ignoring crypto not because they are unaware of its existence.

Almost everyone knows what it is.

They simply don't get it  or heard about all those scams, hacks, and people losing money in cryptocurrency.

Such an image is rather difficult to change.

Nevertheless, I don't believe that the future of crypto is dependent on mass adoption.

Sometimes, the most valuable ideas emerge in groups of enthusiasts who continue developing their projects in spite of general skepticism.

Perhaps, crypto is such a project.

Perhaps, it isn't.

Nobody knows.

However, here is the question I ask myself from time to time:

If crypto never became popular, would you still believe in it?

For my part, the answer reflects much better why I invested in it than any price charts ever could.
