What ADHD Does to Your Brain

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by problems with focus, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. People with ADHD often have a harder time paying attention in class or completing tasks at work, leading to difficulties in social settings. ADHD can also lead to mood swings and problems with self-esteem. Lack of understanding by peers, friends and family members predisposes the person to anxiety about poor performance, causes self-blame about missed schedules and deadlines, and creates social isolation. Forgetfulness and losing items is a common symptom.

ADHD begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood, although the symptoms may change over time. It is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Environmental factors such as stress, poor nutrition, and exposure to toxins can also contribute to the development of ADHD. It is believed that ADHD runs in families, so if you have a parent or sibling with ADHD, you are more likely to have it as well. There is no single test used to diagnose ADHD. Instead, doctors will use a variety of methods, including taking a medical history, conducting physical exams, and observing behaviour.
