Rare edible gill mushrooms - Monk's head or trooping funnel

This is another species of the type "I don't collect because I don't know". Although it is edible, it does not inspire confidence because it has plaques. Generally, it's a good approach, you don't know the mushroom - don't collect it, but don't destroy it either.

Trooping funnel is a rare mushroom. If we come across it, it grows in groups, often in devil's circles. It likes both coniferous and deciduous forests, it is important that they are quite bright and moist. Prefers and calcareous soils with an alkaline reaction.

This species of mushroom can also be found in pastures, forest roadsides of forest paths, clearings among tall grass and meadows.

The hat can reach up to 25 cm in diameter, but in most specimens that can be found, the diameter of the hat does not exceed 10 cm.

In very young fruit bodies, the cap has a convex shape, but very quickly takes on a concave, funnel-shaped shape, with a characteristic small hump in the middle. The edges of the hat are turned inwards.

The color of the hat is not uniform. Most are light beige, whitish in color, with numerous pale flesh-colored, pale pink discolorations and spots. The surface is smooth, slippery and shiny when it rains.

Initially white plaques, with age they change color to slightly beige. They overlap the stem quite clearly, they are dense but thin and delicate.

The leg has a rather massive, cylindrical shape, is in the color of the hat, and is full inside.

The whitish or cream flesh is hard, brittle, but becomes fibrous with age. The mushroom has a delicate mushroom flavor and smell reminiscent of almonds. It is an edible species, but only young fruiting bodies are suitable for consumption, as the old ones are stringy. In the kitchen, it is mainly used in vinegar marinades.

Good luck 😉
