Old man of the woods - edible mushroom, hairy like a lamb

Not all mushrooms have unique, distinctive features that distinguish them from other species. This mushroom undeniably has such a feature - it is hairy like a sheep's skin and it is impossible to confuse it with any other mushroom.

This is a very rare species of mushroom and although the young fruit bodies are edible, it is not recommended to collect it for culinary purposes.

This species can be found most often in the mountains or foothills, in coniferous and mixed forests. It appears in summer and usually grows singly.

The hat, which is the business card of this mushroom, can reach up to 15 cm in diameter. It has a grey-brown, sometimes black-brown color.

When young, the fruiting body has an almost spherical cap shape, which opens with age. It is covered with warts, thick gray scales that turn black with age. From under the scales come out villi resembling animal hair.

The fungus belongs to those that have tubes. At first they are white, then they turn gray, gray-brown. They turn black when damaged.

The leg is long, hard, cylindrical in shape. It is covered with small gray scales. It also darkens under pressure. It doesn't have a ring.

The flesh has an unpleasant odor and turns pink when cut. Slightly mushroom flavor.
