Occurrence. The fungus is not common, it grows most often in groups, in deciduous and coniferous forests, sometimes in parks, along roads.


This species is found in Europe, North America, and Japan. It is not uncommon. It grows in late autumn from September to early December, even with light frosts. It usually forms large clump (hence the name) in meadows, deciduous forests, and gardens.
