Shrub that blooms twice a year - Nigra or purple magnolia (Magnolia liliflora)

This shrub is the only specimen that I managed to spot in the Silesian Park, specifically on the outskirts of "Rosarium".

Ten krzew to jedyny egzemplarz który udało mi się wypatrzeć w Parku Śląskim, a dokładnie na obrzeżach "Rosarium".

The plant can reach up to 3 m in height, although the one I photographed seems to be slightly larger. It grows in a rather shady place, the sun reaches there only occasionally through the dense leaves of nearby trees. It is highly frost resistant. It will survive even frosts below minus 30 degrees Celsius.

Roślina może osiągnąć do 3 m wysokości, chociaż ta którą sfotografowałem wydaje się być nieco większa. Rośnie w miejscu raczej zacienionym, słońce dociera tam tylko sporadycznie przez gęste liście pobliskich drzew. Jest wysoce mrozoodporna. Przetrwa nawet mrozy poniżej minus 30 stopni Celsjusza.

It's already the end of May, but I managed to spot this shrub in three stages of flowering. Because on the plant there are undeveloped, developed and already faded flowers.

Jest już koniec maja, ale udało mi się wypatrzeć ten krzew w trzech fazach kwitnienia. Bowiem na roślinie znajdują się kwiaty nierozwinięte, rozwinięte i już przekwitłe.

An interesting fact is that this plant blooms twice a year. This is a rarity in Central European climates, where spring comes late and frosts occur as early as August.

Ciekawostką jest fakt że roślina ta kwitnie dwa razy w roku. To rzadkość w klimacie środkowo europejskim, gdzie wiosna przychodzi późno, a przymrozki zdarzają się już w sierpniu.

The first flowering period is April-May, and ends at the end of May, when the leaves appear on the bush, which is currently the second flowering period. The second bloom takes place at the turn of July and August, but then there are fewer flowers than in spring.

Pierwsze kwitnienie przypada na okres kwiecień-maj, i kończy się pod koniec maja, gdy na krzewie pojawią się liście, czyli obecnie, natomiast drugi okres kwitnienia. Drugie kwitnienie przypada na przełomie lipca i sierpnia, ale wtedy pojawia się już mniej kwiatów niż wiosną.

Purple magnolia purple flowers reach about 5 cm in height. They part during warm spring days.

Filetowo purpurowe kwiaty magnolii purpurowej osiągają około 5 cm wysokości. Rozchylają się podczas ciepłych dni wiosennych.

Magnolia flowers have a wonderful fragrance. Essential oils are intensively secreted during warm spring days, then the flower opens and releases them, and I had the opportunity to observe this unique phenomenon.

Kwiaty magnolii maja cudowny zapach. Olejki eteryczne intensywnie wydzielane są podczas ciepłych wiosennych dni, wtedy kwiat się otwiera i je uwalnia, i miałem okazję to unikalne zjawisko zaobserwować.

This plant is often grown in home gardens. In cultivation, it is quite demanding, because it needs fertile humus soil. Doesn't like too much water. The plant is watered too intensively, it dries up when overwatered.

Roślina ta często jest uprawiana w przydomowych ogrodach. W hodowli jest dość wymagająca, bo potrzebuje żyznej gleby próchniczej. Nie lubi zbyt dużej ilości wody. Roślina zbyt intensywnie podlewana, przelana usycha.
