Growing a Sumatra beast at home to cure Alzheimer's? - outrage on some famous social media

Hoduję w domu bestię z Sumatry leczącą alzhaimera? - gównoburza w pewnych "znanych mediach społecznościowych"

Traveling around exotic countries in the world, I have such a small Hobby. It is collecting the seeds of various plants. I know that biologists, ecologists, mycologists and all other "-gists" will be outraged that plants and seeds cannot be transported without special permits, untested etc. and it carries severe penalties. Well - maybe I committed a crime, but I'm ashamed, and even glad that I managed to do it.

Yesterday, I posted on a well-known social networking site, a plant group, photos of seeds brought from Sumatra 8 years ago and asked if anyone knew the name of this plant. I have also attached a photo of an 8-year-old seedling of a tree that has already reached almost 180 cm in height.

Inquiries went crazy, hundreds of likes fell and of course a "shit storm" broke out about how irresponsible I am that I bring plants I don't know and pose a threat to the ecosystem. Of course, when I listen to such pseudo-scientists who have never poked their nose outside the computer, I want to laugh. Because from all my trips to tropical countries I probably brought so many bacteria, diseases, fungi, and also seeds that I didn't know I had brought with me at all. But hundreds of millions of people do this every year, traveling around the world knowing that they are spreading everything, everywhere around the world. We can't change it, and nature somehow defends itself against it. And that in the transports of, for example, bananas there are invasive species of snakes, worms, spiders and cocaine, no one sees it anymore. Fortunately, the vast majority of observers were former supporters, and a large group asked for seeds, because it is said to be rare to grow this tree at home and bring it to such a state.

Finally I found out what I brought from distant Sumatra

As it turned out, the plant he successfully grows at home is a Ceiba pentandra, or a kopak tree. This plant is one of the largest tropical forest trees in the world. It can grow up to 70 m tall. And here the skeptics fell silent a bit, but continued to bite with scientific arguments.

Subsequently, it turned out that this tree has no chance of surviving in European conditions outside, because light frosts will cause death and is suitable only for home cultivation, greenhouse and will not threaten native species. Silence from the haters again, but only for a moment.

Subsequent entries start only in my favor. There are links to companies where you can buy these seeds. Links what this tree is useful for, oh and ah how beautiful this tree I grew and will it send seeds?. But the best is yet to come.

It turns out that the tree is edible, especially the young leaves. The down contained in the walnut, which is incredibly soft, is used to produce many products, including excellent pillows - nomen omen I'm going to buy this down, 1 Kg costs about USD 25. And what is most interesting - the substances contained in this plant are a cure for Alzheimer's. Here, the hate team almost froze, and the moderator decided to disable the ability to add comments. Over. But the likes keep coming.

Tu prawie ekipa hejterska zamarła, a moderator postanowił wyłączyć możliwość dodawania komentarzy. Over. Ale lajki idą cały czas.

Now a little about the plant itself. It is a five-stamen downy tree or a kopak tree (Ceiba pentandra). The rainforest tree grows up to 70 m and its trunk can be up to 3 m in diameter - great! The seeds, which I am still lucky enough to have, can survive up to 50 years in a dry place - this is amazing and I will definitely try to sprout the tree again in the fall. The tree probably comes from America, and can be found in tropical Africa and Asia. I brought the seeds from Sumatra, but I also saw a young tree in Cambodia, on a pepper plantation in Kampot. There, I was very intrigued by his spikes, which can be seen in the photo below. It is the national tree of Puerto Rico and Guatemala, formerly recognized by the Mayans as a sacred tree (yaxche).

70 meters high, 3-meter trunk and very fast annual growth, it can be a big problem for my apartment. There is a way for that too. The tree can be pruned and grown just like a "bonsai" tree, that comforted me.

Kapok tree as a cure for Alzheimer's?

Drzewo kopakowe lekiem na Alzaheimera?

I am not a scientist, and I will not write about healing properties here. However, studies have shown that isolated compounds from the above-ground parts of the tree showed a remarkable inhibition of the causes of Alzheimer's disease in 91%, and the best compound currently obtained from curcumin only 70%.
