This will likely be my last post here sharing my fungal finds for several months to come. Though the weather has been uncharacteristically warm for my region and extended the mushroom hunting season well into the winter months, the frost and snow has finally begun to cover the forest floor when I live. This collection of winter fungi will likely be my last significant finds until the frozen soils give way to new life in the coming spring. I already can't wait to uncover what they keep hidden from me now.
With the colder temperatures creeping in, the fungi are far less abundant here in western Michigan, USA than they have been in the months prior, but I was lucky enough to gather a few photos of late-blooming species before they were obscured by the snow shortly after. I have included a few species of lichen as well as moss in this post as well. I am far less acquainted with the local lichen and moss species than the fungal ones, but perhaps I will take this winter as an opportunity to become more acquainted with the hardy lichen species that persist through even our coldest and harshest winters.
Apart from the species that I came across, I also stumbled across someone's artwork: deliciated arranged mosaics of plants, fungi, and lichen in patterns and natural instillations. While I have absolutely no idea who is responsible for these works of art, I was delighted to find them off the beaten path and thought that these creations were worth sharing. I hope that you enjoy them as well!
As always, feel free to offer your suggestions should you believe that I have misidentified any of the species shown below. Happy Mushroom Monday!
