Happy Fungi Friday everyone! Today, I'd like to share a few images of late fall fungi found in the woods of western Michigan, USA. The uncharacteristically warm weather we have experienced over the last few weeks has extended the mushroom hunting season in my local woodlands and provided me with perhaps my last chance of the year to explore my local woods without the need for a thick, warm jacket and some well-lined gloves. I'll happy take advantage of this weather while I can!
Apart from a few Shaggy Mane (Coprinus comatus) that I chose not to collect, I did not come across any gourmet edible species on my last trip to the woods. That being said, I was able to find a wonderful variety of mushrooms along the way. Some of my favorite finds include a Ravenel's Stinkhorn (Phallus ravenelii) adorned with flies, a picturesque Yellow American Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria var. guessowii) nestled among a stand of red pine, and a miniature forest of Conical Brittlestems (Parasola conopilea) rising from a moist bed of woodchips.
I hope you enjoy these pictures, and as always, feel free to offer your suggestions if you believe that I have misidentified any of the species listed below. Happy Fungi Friday!
