A total of (18) eighteen prison guards and inmates at one of Philippines jam-packed prisons have tested positive for the deadly global pandemic coronavirus. This happened in the country's Quezon City Jail located in the capital Manila.

As a result it has heightened fears of a rapid virus spread among the inmates inside the country's prisons.
The virus spread has seen another 30 prisoners showing signs of the virus inside the Quezon City Jail. The jail is overcrowded with prisoners with almost no space for movement among inmates. Most inmates tend to sleep on staircases, benches and open air basketball courts.

Most Philippine human right groups have started to call on the government to think of early release of inmates in other to protect their lives expecially prisoners with non-violent offences as well as the sick and elderly in an effort to ease congestion and lower the risk of transmission.
The nation has a steadily rising number of confirmed coronavirus cases, with 5,878 infections and 387 deaths to date as announced by the World Health Organization.
