Hidden Messages of the Dance Hot "FREED FROM DESIRE"

By Invictus21 | MusicLife | 10 Oct 2023

Who has not heard the bouncy hit "Freed from Desire" ? It is a dance-pop song by Italian singer GALA and was released in 1996. The song is famous for its catchy and repetitive lyrics that are typical of many dance and electronic tracks from that era. While the lyrics may seem simple on the surface(especially because the first reaction is not to listen but move our feet). I am here to share the fact that they can be interpreted in various ways. In fact I would like to argue  that hey often convey a sense of longing, desire, and liberation. You can pick up a rebellion of some sort to possibly materialistic tendency for a more authentic life journey and experience.

Before I begin the analysis, I noticed that it is a this song is especially popular at football stadiums and for sporting victories. Mainly football or soccer players love this song but from the web you will find Rugby, Cricket and of late the winners of the Ryder's Golf Challenge  celebrating to this song. The  European golf players decided to modify and customize it to themselves while teasing their American rivals...See videos below:

Now let's get into the lyrics whose DEEP and PROFOUND message unfortunately lays hidden or not seriously contemplated as many (including myself on many occasions) simply belch out the hook: "FREED FROM DESIRE...mind and sense purified" .....

1. "My love has got no money, he's got his strong beliefs."
This line suggests that the speaker's love interest may not be wealthy but possesses strong convictions or principles. It hints that love is more important than material wealth.

2. "My love has got no power, he's got his strong beliefs."
- Similar to the first line, this emphasizes that the person the GALA loves might lack traditional forms of power or influence but is steadfast in their beliefs. It implies that love can exist independently of societal status.

3. "My love has got no fame, he's got his strong beliefs."
Once again, the focus is on the absence of fame or recognition in the GALA's love interest. The repetition of "strong beliefs" reinforces the idea that the person's character and values are what matter most.

4. "My love has got no money, he's got his strong beliefs."
The repetition of this line reinforces the central theme of love being more valuable than materialism. It suggests that the GALA's affection is based on deeper more profound qualities that are intangible.

5. "One day you'll see my love, someday you'll see."
Now a slight change from the repetition to invoke a sense of optimism and anticipation. GALA believes that eventually, others will recognize the worth of their love interest and their strong beliefs.

6. "One day you'll see my love, someday you'll see."
- Repeating this line emphasizes the idea that someday, the world will acknowledge the importance of the person GALA loves, even if they lack money, power, or fame.

7. "The beauty of the world, the late, the hours, the sulky teenage girls."
This line apparently touches on various aspects of life, including the beauty of the world, the passage of time ("the late"), and the moodiness or rebelliousness of teenage girls. It might suggest that love can transcend these worldly concerns.

8. "Like cries from the mountains, like the birds in the sky, like the howlin' of wolves, by the hungriest night."*

- These similes transmit a sense of nature and wildness. Love is compared to the sounds of nature and wilderness, suggesting its primal and untamed qualities.

9. "Like the sound of the forests, like the smell of the sea, like the sight of a bee, by the summertime."
- Continuing with natural imagery, this line likens love to sensory experiences associated with the natural world, including the smell of the sea and the sight of a bee. It reinforces the idea that love is a visceral and sensory experience.

Overall, "Freed from Desire" conveys a message that love is more important than material wealth, fame, or power. The repetitive lyrics serve to emphasize this theme, and the use of natural imagery adds depth to the song's emotional impact, suggesting that love is a primal and essential force in our lives. Last but not least, the continuation of the song title " mind and senses purified" is a Bhuddist concept adding to the mysticism and intrigue in this high energy song.

What do you think? Do you know other songs with equally enigmatic lyrics and secret messages?
