Prelude on "Nicht so traurig, nicht so sehr" [Philip Daniel; 2017]

By PhilipDaniel | Musica Melopoetica | 27 Nov 2020

A prelude, on the hymn tune "Nicht so traurig, nicht so sehr", characterized by a somewhat ornate rendering of the cantus firmus in the highest voice, subsidiary melodic material partly derived from the hymn tune in the inner voices that entwine in contrapuntal dialogue with the upper voice, and a relentless walking-bass in the pedalboard. The work reaches an apex of intensity before concluding in the dominant (G major) with a kind of modified plagal cadence.
