A prelude on the melancholy hymn tune "Herzliebster Jesu", wherein a canon in inversion (on newly-devised thematic material partly derived from the hymn tune) proceeds in the left hand while the right hand interjects with cantilena-like phrases of the hymn in a heartrending vox humana registration and the pedalboard traces out a freely-unfolding walking bass figure (with its own scriptural connotations). The work concludes on a luminous E major triad, resolving the anguish of the preceding measures in a redemptive blaze of light.
