A solemn rhapsody on the hymn tune "Das alte Jahr vergangen ist", in which a heavily-ornamented cantus firmus (often strongly suggesting the Phrygian mode) unfolds above a tonally-ambiguous web of chromatic polyphony in the inner voices, which themselves proceed above a pizzicato-like bass line. Denouement arrives with the sudden interjection of a recitative, answered by a more tonally stable chorale-type episode ending on the dominant.
