An art song I composed for soprano and harmonium (or piano), setting the first stanza of the poem "Ich kann wohl manchmal singen" by Prussian Romantic poet Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff in a musical idiom reminiscent of pre-World War I German Expressionism, characterized by relative motivic economy, lavish polyphonic motion of the inner voices, highly chromatic voice-leading and the frequent suspension (though not total abandonment) of tonality itself. Naturally, the .midi rendition does not do the work justice -- it requires human performers possessed of technical and expressive skill alike. But, if at all possible, keeping this in mind, try to hear to the essence of the work as absolute music.
