Chorale Harmonization on "Merton" (Philip Daniel) [Scrolling Score]

By PhilipDaniel | Musica Melopoetica | 18 Sep 2019

My motet-like chorale harmonization of Merton from the English Hymnal, with the Hebrew hymn Ma'oz Tzur (Rock of Ages) intermittently appearing in the lower registers in an increasingly ornamented fashion. For SATB choir with flute, oboe, pipe organ and two violoncelli. Regarding this work, the composer and theorist Evan Bennet writes: "This piece has a fabric that reminds me of wool: tight and spiraling, warm and scratchy."
