Aequale "Vermischte Fuge" [Philip Daniel; 2020]

By PhilipDaniel | Musica Melopoetica | 21 Oct 2020

A fugue with canonic elements? A canon with fugal elements? In any case, my Aequale "Vermischte Fuge" (scored for flugelhorn, F alto horn, E♭ alto horn, and baritone horn) is a highly theatrical work of imitative counterpoint, its subject characterized by harsh minor and augmented seconds and augmented fourths / diminished fifths, producing a harmonic landscape full of angst, ever seeking but denied resolution until the very end.

I present the engraved "conductor's score", below:

The painting in the video is Joseph Mallord William Turner's "Death on a Pale Horse".
