Aequale "in memoriam Sir Roger Scruton" [Philip Daniel; 2020] [SCROLLING SCORE]

An Aequale for two C Trumpets and one F Horn, composed in memory of the late Sir Roger Scruton, a great philosopher of aesthetics. Within its brief span, this Aequale develops the incipit (opening motif) of the pensive Lutheran hymn tune "Kein Stündlein geht dahin", culminating in a subdued but reverential climax. The text of the Lutheran hymn "Kein Stündlein geht dahin", in both the original German and in English translation, courtesy of Elisabeth Graf:

(1) Kein Stündlein geht dahin,

Es liegt mir in dem Sinn,

Ich bin auch immer wo ich bin,

Daß mich der Tod

Wird bringen in die letzte Not.

Ach Gott! wenn alles mich verläßt,

So tue du bei mir das Best.

(2) Hier ist kein Aufenthalt,

Der Tod hat die Gewalt,

Er frißt und würget jung und alt,

Er reißt uns fort

Aus unsern Orden, Stadt und Ort.

Ach Gott! wenn alles mich verläßt,

So tue du bei mir das Best.

(1) No hour passes,

Without my thinking,

Wherever I may be,

That death will bring me

The ultimate despair.

Oh God! If all else leaves me,

Do your best for me.

(2) This is no permanent place of abode,

Death has the power,

It devours and slays young and old,

It snatches us away

From our orders, cities and towns.

Oh God! If all else leaves me,

Do your best for me.
