MZ 250: The German Two-Stroke Legend That Conquered the Roads

MZ 250: The German Two-Stroke Legend That Conquered the Roads

In 1956, the MZ 250 saga was born in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Its famous classic version, featuring large fenders and iconic styling, quickly became a symbol of durability and unbreakability.

In East Germany (GDR), 250 cc MZ motorcycles saw their first official use with the Volkspolizei (People's Police) before being widely introduced to the general public. It served as the primary patrol and escort vehicle across East German cities and highways. These police variants came equipped with sirens, emergency lights, and rigid side cases.

This engineering masterpiece features:

Engine: Single-cylinder, 2-stroke, air-cooled

Displacement: 243 cc

Power: 21 HP @ 5,500 RPM

Transmission: 5-speed with constant-mesh gearbox and a fully enclosed secondary chain in rubber hoses

Electrical System: 12-volt with alternator (a major upgrade over previous 6V models)

Brakes: Front 242 mm hydraulic disc brake and rear drum brake

Dry Weight: Approx. 141 kg (311 lbs)

Top Speed: Around 130 km/h (80 mph)

The MZ 250 is a motorcycle originally designed to withstand severe military and police use during Cold War Germany, yet it ended up becoming the most cherished daily commuter and family vehicle for thousands. This explains why its mechanical build is considered virtually indestructible.
