František Janeček’s Jawa manufactured some of the most durable machines of the 20th century. Among them, the Jawa 350 stands out as the ultimate icon of power, smooth handling, and mechanical ingenuity.
Unlike many of its single-cylinder rivals from the era, the Jawa 350 was powered by a parallel-twin, two-stroke engine. This design gave the bike its signature rhythmic exhaust note, great low-end torque, and impressive pulling power—making it the top choice for long-distance travel and hauling heavy loads with Velorex sidecars across Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
Technical Specifications (Jawa 350 Typ 634):
Engine: Parallel-twin, 2-stroke, air-cooled
Displacement: 343 cc
Power: 22 HP @ 5,250 RPM
Transmission: 4-speed with semi-automatic foot clutch
Electrical System: 6-volt (upgraded to 12V in later revisions)
Brakes: Expanding drum brakes front and rear
Weight: 155 kg (341 lbs)
Top Speed: 125 km/h (78 mph)
The Semi-Automatic Foot Clutch:
Jawa patented a mechanism that linked the gear lever directly to the clutch release. Riders could change gears smoothly simply by moving the foot pedal, without touching the handlebar clutch lever.
The Dual-Function Lever:
The foot pedal served two purposes: pushing it inward and rotating it backward 90 degrees converted it into the kickstarter. Once the twin-cylinder engine fired up, it automatically returned to its horizontal position to select gears.
Designed to endure harsh roads with minimal maintenance, the Jawa 350 evolved from a reliable daily commuter into a timeless classic revered by vintage motorcycle enthusiasts worldwide.
