  Hola que tal a todos, espero se encuentren con bien y sean bienvenidos a un nuevo artículo de un servidor. En el artículo anterior hablamos de "¿qué fue de Musicmatch Jukebox?" y ahora veremos que ha sucedido con un programa similar la misma época.

  Quicktime es un reproductor multimedia desarrollado por Apple en 1991, pero a diferencia de sus competidores que solo creaban un reproductor de audio y video con uno que otro agregado interesante, Quicktime es un framework, es decir un conjunto de utilerías que permiten a terceros usarlas para crear nuevos productos, concretamente en su edición pro contiene bibliotecas que hacen posible la transmisión de contenidos en alta definición entre dispositivos de la marca Apple y a través de internet, puede también grabar audio y video desde dispositivos externos (similar a Musicmatch), editar dichas grabaciones y muchas más funcionalidades para los profesionales del audio y video.

  Sin embargo, en su edición gratuita y por lo menos para Windows que es la versión que yo conocí no hay mucho que decir. En este caso solo tenemos un reproductor de audio y video, además de un plugin para el navegador web que permite reproducir contenido multimedia en la web que use dicho complemento.

  "¿Y que ha sucedido con Quicktime?", pues sigue existiendo pero ya no tan extendido como antes. Fue muy conocido a finales de los 90's y primeros años del 2000 por venir de regalo en revistas de informática y otras que regalaban cds que complementaban la publicación. La misma estrategia se usó para Winamp, Realplayer y otras aplicaciones que llegaron así a nuestras primeras computadoras.

  Personalmente nunca me gustó Quicktime, en su versión pro sería interesante, pero siendo honestos, pocos en ese entonces íbamos a pagar por consumir software y menos cuando había alternativas gratuitas como Windows media player que no solo hacía lo mismo que Quicktime y su plugin web era mejor. 

  Actualmente aunque es posible bajar de manera oficial la versión para Windows, Apple ya no da soporte a Quicktime y ha detenido su desarrollo quedándose en la versión 7.7.9 como ultimo lanzamiento (pueden descargarlo si lo desean desde este enlace). Pero para los productos Apple la situación tampoco es muy diferente, parece ser que Apple tampoco se acuerda de su producto estrella pues desde el año 2014 no ha habido movimiento alguno y se quedaron en la versión 7.75.

Conclusiones:

  Quicktime es un reproductor multimedia propiedad de Apple, "aunque se encuentra activo" y es posible descargarlo desde su web oficinal, "ya solo existe con nosotros solo en recuerdos" pues parece ser que está descontinuado aunque sin ser oficial esto último. Así que como recomendación es mejor usar otra herramienta ya que si esta no funciona con las versiones más actualizadas de Windows o Mac pues Apple no hará nada por corregir el problema, tampoco lo hará si hay fallos de seguridad al usar su software.

It was well known in the late 90's and early 2000's for coming as gifts in computer magazines and others that gave away CDs that complemented the publication. The same strategy was used for Winamp, Realplayer and other applications that thus arrived on our first computers.

  Personally I never liked Quicktime, in its pro version it would be interesting, but to be honest, few of us back then were going to pay to consume software and even less when there were free alternatives like Windows media player that not only did the same thing as Quicktime and its web plugin was better.
