Just like everyone else, this season I think was the most anticipated for this year. Given I already watched the first three seasons, it was both an obligation and curiosity to see what happened next. Today, I binged watch the whole season with my dad and cousin.
I have tons of things to talk about, from start to finish, head to toe. I have many questions, remarks, and more. Before I dive in, I want to talk about my expectations. Season one and two sealed the first heist. So, for the fourth season, you would think that it's enough to also seal the deal and steal the gold. But, the season doesn't end this way. The season continues right where season three ended. Nairobi is shot and in need of a surgery. The professor had it all covered, advanced surgical equipment, in addition to the help of a Pakistani doctor. Right before performing any surgery on Nairobi, the whole crew got into one of the endless disputes between each other. For some reason, Tokyo takes command from Palermo which was the biggest mistake because he is an egomaniac and will do everything to stay in command. Then later we know that Palermo was put leader because he was the one behind this heist, he supposedly solves complex equations which was completely irrelevant. During the whole season, I didn't see him do a single thing he's good at. One thing he was good at is messing up the whole plan which was ironic because he loves the plan and wouldn't betray it. After we finished episode three, it still didn't excite enough to keep on watching. But we continued just for the sake to finish it today. Due to Palermo's crazy decision to leave the bank, he was captured by the team and tied up to chair next to the chief security "Gandia" for the governor of the bank of Spain. Palermo's will to get back in control exceeds everything, he thought that creating chaos would help him. He proceeds to help Gandia by telling him how he can liberate himself from the handcuffs. Gandia is an ex-military, special operative, and was the bodyguard of a minister. In short, the guy is unbelievably skilled and was painted by the Professor as an assassin. How would an experienced guy like Gandia doesn't know how to escape from the cuffs? Anyway, he gets loose and directly goes towards Nairobi to kill her. This woman can't catch a break, she recently woke up from the surgery and was barely breathing. Gandia tries to suffocate her with a pillow, miraculously Nairobi was able to grab a pointy a syringe and hit Gandia right in the neck. Sensing he was not able to finish the job before backup arrives. He retreats and goes to the panic room where he makes contact with the police. This room had access to security cameras plus a locker full of military gear, grenades, M16s, etc... After the end of the fourth episode, I got excited, this Gandia guy changed everything.
Onto the second half of the season, Gandia is a man on a mission. Took the green light from the police to kill all robbers based on self-defense. By the time all of this happened, the Professor was on a quest of his own. He wanted to make sure that Lisbon was still alive. And he made sure of it by bribing an officer of the law. Who started to feed him information on all police actions. Back inside the bank of Spain, Gandia has mainly Nairobi in his head. To get to her he got Tokyo and tied her like a dog. Now everyone starts to look for Tokyo. Gandia wanted this all along to have them all separated. First, he targets Rio and Denver. Here is where everything goes illogical and stupid. Denver and Rio stuck in the elevator and Gandia are shooting tons of bullets at them and the other two responding but somehow, just somehow nobody got shot. I mean if someone didn't even know how to shoot a gun and shot this many rounds I am pretty sure he would have hit something. And what's, even more, crazier is when the whole squad came shooting at him and still didn't hit him well (they did hit him but on the bulletproof vest). Nobody thought of targeting his legs for instance. Moving on, now with everyone firing at him, he knew that Nairobi would be alone so he seized this opportunity and went after her. When he got to her, he held her captive to secure his way back to safety. He got out of the bathroom with Nairobi as his human shield. The next few moments were the most shocking of this season, Gandia shoots Nairobi right in the head. For the majority, it would seem unexpected but for me, it wasn't. I had a feeling that Gandia will kill her. Also even after killing Nairobi, Gandia was open and could have been shot many times. Amazingly, not even one bullet got to him despite all the squad unleashing hell on him. It was only when Denver threw a grenade on him that he got badly injured. For a while there, it seemed that the police were up to nothing. Meanwhile, Lisbon is being interrogated by the police, she held up pretty well. But inspector Alicia got into her head and she was about to make a call to her mother when Antonanzas, the bribed policeman, gives Lisbon a cup of coffee and tells her Paris. Seeing this, she was relieved and sure that the Professor would get her out of this trouble.
Each episode there was a lot of useless flashbacks, one time Berlin, Palermo, and the Professor were at a fancy restaurant. And just because a guy made fun of Berlin's tie, he attacked him in the bathroom by hitting him with a fork on his balls. What was the purpose of this? Another flashback was that Denver's cousin was a he but turned into a she. There was no reason at all for us to know this detail but apparently, they just wanted to tell us that they added a transgender character. It's becoming a trend, every show must have a lesbian, gay, transgenders. Arturo Roman is the most useless actor in this whole season. He has no purpose whatsoever, why on earth would he enter the bank. To be a hero, and he ends up raping women. For me, he should have been long gone after season two, his part was done. In the midst of all this action, melting the gold was active all the time.
The last two episodes were better than there predecessors. The Professor upped his game and started to hit the police out of nowhere. First that they tortured Rio. Second, they unofficially arrested Lisbon. Third, he sent out the governor's bodyguard holding Nairobi's body in a wooden crate. And everyone was shocked and silenced even the police. But I didn't really get the reaction. I understood it from the protesters' view but why would the cops be shocked, it's not like the first time a fugitive got killed in action. The police are now under investigation because of these violent actions. The Professor successfully rescued Lisbon while she was leaving court with a team of diggers. The way I saw it, these last two episodes are where the Professor really shone and was back to his genius thinking and planning. In the end, they performed the sickest trick on the police. They tricked them into thinking that Gandia wanted an evacuation and the evacuation helicopter was being flown by Marseille with Lisbon about to get down and help the rest. The crew in the bank starts to celebrate their reunion with Lisbon, and that they will succeed in this heist for Nairobi. Inspector Alicia was still obsessed with this case that she went alone to find the Professor. She successfully did, the last moments of the series were Alicia holding a gun against the Professor in his lair.
If I want to summarize it, it was simply disappointing, useless flashbacks only meant to fill out time, stupid decisions, illogical shooting. I mean they could have done way better. For now, the first heist is still better. Pushing the second heist for a third season seems way too much.
